If you are told the cost up front, what is the problem?

So you're saying that if I walk in ASDA, all their prices are cons and I have the right to pay them exactly what they paid their supplier? It's exactly the same thing.

£3.90 is what the seller paid for the service, and as with anything else, they can choose to sell that service on to the buyer at whatever price they see fit.

I wouldn't say it's the same thing. For example, don't ASDA give you a gift card if they 'overcharge' you at the till? I know they used to. Not sure if they do now.

For example. Next charge £3.99 for next day delivery. If they send the package late, or the package gets delayed in transit, or they don't deliver next day etc. Next will ring you to say they shall be giving you a refund, unless you get in touch first. I've had this happen in the past.

Then what do you get with eBay? Nothing. Every company is different in how things are dealt with. But obviously with eBay, you have private sellers added to the mix.

Of course the main point is profit. Some sellers can sell for a loss, not everything is sold for a profit 100% of the time.

But on this thread, the buyer was charged £12 and the postage was £3.90. The item was sent in poor packaging. So of course, the buyer has every right to be unhappy with the price and packaging. The seller also admitted they just made up the price, because they copied it from another listing. So it's not just the overcharging, it was the other poor choices the seller made as a whole.

  • I had this many times when I was a business seller on Ebay, also selling rare and vintage toys as it happens.

I never overcharged on postage, small stuff was free (included in the price) or 60-70% of the stamp price if it was a large expensive item being sent special delivery, these were the days before the likes of Parcel2Go.

Quite annoying being on the receiving end of this especially when the cost is displayed upfront and buyers use it as an angle to "negotiate" a discount. It was rarely after delivery I had issues, usually just after winning before the buyer paid they sent messages complaining about the postage cost, thinking they're being clever and that they have me over a barrel post sale with the hint of bad feedback. Suppose if I was still selling on ebay now I wouldn't last long with negative feedback by stealth with DSR's.

As for the OP, I wouldn't be happy being overcharged £8.

But how much do you think Next pay Hermes, their delivery company for that package. I can tell you for certain that it's less than £3.99 . So it's exactly the same thing. Plus Next just send stuff in a sealed carrier bag. Not exactly impressive or high value packaging.
  • I expect Next tell Hermes how much they want to pay.

I am a bit confused it. Is it a general opinion that a buyer should be able to tell a seller what level of profit they are allowed to make?

Of course it's less than £3.99. I never said any different. The point I was making. It is different for every business.

If anything goes wrong, you get a refund and a phone call to say. They don't just send items in a sealed carrier bag. My items have always been in boxes and protected (Depending on what you buy). I have never had any damaged items.

Would you get a refund on eBay for poor service and poor packaging? Would you get a refund for a delayed delivery date etc? Not a chance in hell.

No, but eBay do ask buyers to rate their sellers based on the experience they have with how that seller charged for post and packing. The seller cannot influence those stars unless they go free post.
