Cruise changed course - entitled to compensation?

Last time I went on a cruise that included Guernsey we didn't get to go there either (and it was specifically somewhere we wanted to visit).
At that point in time (a good few years ago) there was not a large cruise ship terminal on Guernsey and tenders (the lifeboats) needed to be used to ferry passengers to the port. This can be difficult especially with some of the more elderly and disabled passengers so the ship tend to not do it in high winds.
I do not know if a cruise ship terminal has been built since that time, but it certainly was the case that Guernsey was more frequently cancelled in high winds because it required the use of tenders.
I've had minor alterations to a couple of cruises.
The staff always do their best to put on alternative activities if it changes from a port day to a sea day. Their breaks and days off (of which they get hardly any) are cancelled to suit passengers needs.
We've just accepted it when it happens.
The cruise ships and crews have always done their best, but things happen some times.
It's dissapointing but they only alter the itinerary if there is a valid health/safety reason.0 -
Yes sail deliberately into bad weather and have all sorts of accidents on board...we'd have people on here asking can we sue/get compo. The Captain is the Master...his decision is final for the good of the ship, crew and passengers....end of.0

A cruise we were on 2009 had Guernsey on the itinerary, and it was cancelled due to high winds.
As it was a tender port, the weather is a big factor. After.all, they're not going to ferry people from the ship to the port in rough seas - it'd be very dangerous
I'm sure people would want compensation if they were injured getting on or off the tender in rough seas.
Whatever happens, the cruise company can't win either way.Early retired - 18th December 2014

BTW as an aside if Guernsey was so important to me on a Cruise as a destination I'd actually know how to properly correctly say that. Burn protection suit on!0

IMO it's a reasonable question to ask if someone hasn't been able to visit the location they were paying for. I don't know the reasons why the OP wanted to go to a certain place, but it might have been important to them for all manner of reasons.
The cruise should have made all reasonable efforts to complete the cruise according to the schedule, but both weather and illness are IMO valid reasons not to be able to complete the schedule as expected.
But I don't think it's unreasonable to ask if the cruise company would offer a discount on a repeat cruise to ensure you have a second chance of getting where you want to go.
I think you will find in their t &c s something along the lines that there may be circumstances beyond their control that will result in changes to the intinery. We had to miss a port of call because bad weather meant we couldn't tenderVuja De - the feeling you'll be here later0 -
Perfect Storm anyone?...let's just sail directly into it? Why would you? Where in the world of common sense would you expect that? COMMON SENSE and the ships Captains decision prevails surely. It's a planned iternary not a guaranteed one.0

Come on guys the OPs a newbie , lighten up. If you don't like what they've written don't reply.
Help her out whether you agree or not. Express your opinion properly. How do newbies learn the way of the forum if there's 3 pages of arguments
We can all be judgemental.
I too have been on a cruise that diverted because of weather. But I did find it odd that other ships made the port. Different ships reacting to weather I suppose. I also been on a ship that couldn't get to three ports because of strikes. Another left people behind because hurricanes were happening. Moral of story don't get on cruises with me
Also I think op posted a reasonable question, not to say she didn't care about the person taken ill but her holiday was spoilt and was there any form of redress. In a society that claims for lots of things what's unreasonable?

A colleague took a two week Caribbean cruise, East and West islands, but due to bad weather in week one they had to do the same trip two weeks running. They did get a load of compensation, but this was considered a major change by RCI.
Guernsey is a dodgy port for tendering. If its any consolation OP you didn't miss much by not visiting Guernsey!0 -
