Cruise changed course - entitled to compensation?

Options
Me and my family recently went on a cruise with P&O, when we booked the itinerary stated that there would be 5 port stops, the last being Geurnsey. A passenger fell ill toward the end of the trip, resulting in the ship changing course to head back to the nearest port. Due to high winds the captain stated that we would not be able to reach the final port and subsequently spend the final few days of the holiday at sea sailing back to Southampton. Although I fully acknowledge that it was important that the ship turned for the sick passangers sake, the final port was the one in which we were most looking forward to, and to be honest the reason we booked the trip.

Is it likely that we would be entitled to either partial refund or possibly some form of compensation? If so what would be the best way to go about it?

We have been on many cruises, and I am sure it is always in the small print, about changing course for bad weather. Sorry, I don't think you will be given even a partial refund.

Well if you had complained to the captain about not sailing through all the high winds, and he said to you, 'Okay then, we will chance it, you may all be seasick, you may all be drowned, lost at sea, but hey.... that's okay.

What would you have said then....
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

This has to be a wind-up, surely. How would you feel if your partner was ill, and the captain refused to change course to get medical treatment because someone kicked up a fuss about how 5 stops were promised.
One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.
  • I have never posted before and have no intention of again. It has not been a helpful experience! I was silly to expect feedback to be objective. I do not understand why people respond if they have such contempt and just enjoy being rude for the fun of it .Why on earth bother????? My advice to the majority of those that have negatively responded, is to use the excess time they have , to do something good rather than try to be nasty. It's easy to be brave behind anonymity!

Yea, you shouldn't have mentioned the sick passenger in your OP.... Problem is that sickness trumps all because at the end o the day most people give some degree o respect to those who need urgent care even on holiday.

You MAY be able to make a coherent point and get compo, but i'm not even going to entertain that 4 you on here simply because were I to be seriously ill on a cruise with you on board I can just see you saying to the captain "sod that guy, keep sailing to port 5 because I don't care about anything other than my holiday". That's not really a good thing and nobody here would want to help you get compo

IMO it's a reasonable question to ask if someone hasn't been able to visit the location they were paying for. I don't know the reasons why the OP wanted to go to a certain place, but it might have been important to them for all manner of reasons.

The cruise should have made all reasonable efforts to complete the cruise according to the schedule, but both weather and illness are IMO valid reasons not to be able to complete the schedule as expected.

But I don't think it's unreasonable to ask if the cruise company would offer a discount on a repeat cruise to ensure you have a second chance of getting where you want to go.

OP obviously didn't read para 43 of the T&Cs when they booked.
After departure, P&O Cruises does not guarantee that the ship will call at every port on the itinerary or follow every part of the advertised route or schedule or that every part of the Package will be provided. P&O Cruises reserves the absolute right to decide whether or not to omit any such port(s) and/or to call at additional ports and/or to change the advertised route, schedule or Package.
