You've clearly had a faulty RCD, and I like Asda's approach - they're probably waiting for you to waste money on a report, and then they'll blame the RCD for blowing and not just tripping.
It's quite clear a faulty electrical device shouldn't blow an RCD - the point of an RCD is to trip, and it should be able to deal with a faulty toaster.[/QUOTEL

I don't get how cheese got into the RCD.
The cheese didn't get into the RCD - it got into the electrical compartment of the toaster and caused a problem with the toaster that should have tripped the RCD. The RCD didn't trip but has 'blown'. OP thinks that is the toaster's fault and ASDA should pay to have the RCD replaced.
I think OP would be better off claiming for the faulty RCD from whoever installed it, as the RCD and/or the installation was clearly faulty which is nothing to do with ASDA.Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!0 -
Very slightly off topic, but it bears mentioning:
If you like cheese ...
....................and you like peas ...
........................................ you'll love cheesy peas!

Ok - So, lets remove the RCD part of the issue.
How did "Excessive Cheese" get into the device. (I have not submerged the device like a fondue).
I would also state that ASDA service team's response, has been less than satisfactory. Spelling my name incorrectly, promising for call backs and not doing so...

Also - From the "Sparkys" on here. If a unit was SO bad, could it potentially blow the RCD, surely there must be some scenario where that occurs.
For everyones information, I usually have a kettle plugged into the same socket and have never had any issues.0 -
What did the electrician who replaced the RCD say was the likely cause of its failure?0

The only thing that should damage an RCD is that RCD being faulty.
They are designed to trip when they detect small current differences (around 20 milliamps) between live and neutral and even if a dead short is detected, they should still trip before suffering any damage themselves.
Just out of curiosity, when was the last time you tested the RCD in question?0 -

I haven't seen/examined the toastie machine so I don't know how the cheese got in - there must be a fault of some sort (either the design is flawed or the individual unit is damaged in some way that allows the ingress of the cheese). I don't dispute that the toastie maker is faulty - I just think that you are only due a refund for the toastie maker (which you have received) and not additional compensation for your dodgy RCD.
As for ASDA's response - I didn't read it all. I found your emails to them quite obnoxious and couldn't be bothered with reading all the way through the long chain of emails. You might find you get more pleasant responses from people if you are pleasant in your communications to them.Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!0
