Last year i did an access course. My husband was claiming jsa and i couldnt claim anything only council tax benfit. (i am to old to claim ema).So i went to college and asked if i could get any money.
They told me every college has an access fund(money they will give away to people really struggling). I showed them what my husbands income was and they gave me a free bus pass for a year. It really helped me and know i am a student nurse in my first year of uni. I am so grateful to the college as i would have had to give up the course if they hadnt payed for my bus pass.:j0 -

The ALF can be a lifeline, especially for mature students. There is a very informative thread on it over on the Students board xGone ... or have I?0 -

I'm a single mum, my son only gets £10 EMA and of course it goes to his bank acount, BUT it costs me £5.90 for the train each day
student railcard is no good as can't use until 10am and has to be in college before that....
whole system is crazy. Many of the kids are getting over £30 a week, and spending it all on booze and fags.
And the parents get no finanacial help !
it should come to the parents, then it could be used to help with college instead.0 -
He should apply to the college for a bursary for help with travel expenses.0

Hi
If he gets kicked out of college, then you would have to let Child Benefit and Tax Credits know that he was no longer in full time education and you would lose the payments from C/B and T/C.
Maybe looking at a Modern Apprentiship in IT would be a good idea for your son.0
