  • My daughter got her notice about 10 days ago and once the form went into the school she was paid all the back pay pretty quickly. Our problem now is that the school have messed it up and marked her as absent on Friday afternoon when she had a hospital appointment. I hope this can be sorted and I hope it has not been sent off to the EMA people yet.

Ziggy, where did your daughter get her notice from? School, or delivered to the home address? My son is getting his card signed every lesson, and mucked up the 1st week when a teacher left the class immediately at the end of the lesson before he could be asked, but they won't do them retrospectively.

My son received a letter to say his application was in their system, but nothing else since then.
One day the clocks will stop, and time won't mean a thing

Be nice to your children, they'll choose your care home

The notice came in the post from the EMA, she then had to take it to the school who processed it. Try calling them to ask for progress, we first applied in the summer but they lost the forms, we them applied again mid-September so it took about 4-5 weeks to process. Be warned when you call up though I have a mix of staff from there, some are clowns but some are good.

I've spoken to the school this morning and they have sorted out the mistake over the hospital appointment, the lady that deals with the EMAs in the school was very helpful and said that she has put it through for her.

Well in our area, i have been told that i have to pay £126 per term towards travel expenses to school for my special needs son out of the EMA, which does not leave him with much. Well at the moment nothing as EMA has not even been sorted outyet, so he is not gettting it. We applied in August and still not sorted!!!

So yet again the government want praise for setting up the EMA, BUT it is being taken away to go towards their travel bills!! So whats the point.

I didnt think this was what EMA was meant for??? I am a single parent , disabled myself and rely totally on benefits. The education dept are insistant that this has to be paid termly and not weekly, even tho i have pointed out that once he does get EMA this will be paid weekly!!

I intend speaking with my MP about this as i feel strongly that the policy was not thought out with any consideration for special needs pupils who clearly need to continue their education for as long as is possible.

EMA has nothing to do with free travel for students at college. As longas your income is not over £30,000 you can claim it for your child and its no hassle. I claim it for my son, i filled the form in no problems. Also other benefits are not affected, whey would they be? I live in west midlands and its costs me £1.50 a day for my sons travel to college and back. National express were advertising something for cheaper bus travel but on looking on website couldnt see anything! Oh and no point in trying to cheat the system as EMA check your NI number so they can see how much you earn. not fair if someone claims EMA when they are earning higher than £30,000?
  • I rang EMA again today as my daughter still hasn't received any payment or notice through the post even though we were told we had been assessed a month ago. I am fuming as today they said her claim was still being processed. How long does it take? She applied in August and its now nearly December.

We are struggling to keep her at college as it is costing around £20 a week just in travel thats without the £30 fee for use of the photographic department which she still has to pay.

We applied in July and they lost the paperwork so we had to apply again at the end of September, she started getting payment about 5 weeks later. If I were you I'd ring and rant!
  • I rang last Wed and was told it was being assessed which can take up to six weeks. The date on their computer said it had started being assessed was Oct 15 so I said I would wait a week and then call again. On hanging up I looked at the calendar what did they mean take six weeks it was six weeks exactly

I waited for the post next day still no letter so back on the phone again. This time I get told it takes five weeks to assess and two to send the letter at this point I had had enough so got an address to complain to. I am hanging on until this Wed and if there is still no sign of the letter they are getting one more call (seeing as a new company has taken over) then it will be all hell let loose. I am making a complaint regardless as it is just not on and will be seeing if they are going to pay for all my phone calls and what interest she may have got if she had been paid on time.

I recently spoke to a friend who I know didnt apply until Sept, they rang was told their application had been lost and would be sent a new one, they asked for the address to complain to and received their notification within a couple of days and never received a new form.

  They make me so mad especially when I was told over a month ago we had been assessed and told how much she would get. What the heck is going on.

Sorry for the long rant, Can anyone tell me how long it is after you take the notification into college before you get any money?
  • my son has just started getting his ema money it has cost me over 200-00 to get him to college so far and we have had a back payment today for 60-00
they still owe us 210-00 and his bonus payment when ever that is due
there is a new company doing the ema now the others have been given the elbow and not before time but they have a lot of clearing up to do
remember it is nice to be important
