Money for 16yr olds in school & college

Hi Grahamliza4 - I work with homeless teenagers and we are only just at the stage of getting EMA through for them. The ones who couldn't get it before have had to do the same and leave College as they couldn't afford to eat, let alone pay rent etc. Forget education, they had to go out and work and their career goals were abandoned. I would really appreciate it if you could look at the Foyer Federation website - we're petitioning against this ruling at the moment - especially the housing benefit rule which states that anyone studying full-time has to pay full rent. For young, homeless people who want an education, this is impossible. Well done for making it through - I know how tough it can be. :T"How far you go in life depends on you being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving and tolerant of the weak and the strong. Because someday in life you will have been all of these."0

Hi
The bus pass is not reduced for EMA. In Bristol the student gets a student photo card and then if purchasing a weekly or monthly ets bus pass they get a slightly reduced amount to pay e.g my daughter pays 11.80 for a week pass as opposed to about 12.60. But this is because she is a student and gets the pass through her college. It has nothing to do with her being in receipt of Ema.
Also as someone rightly stated Students will lose all their weekly EMA even if they are off for just one day. However if they have a pre existing medical condition which would be supported by their G.P, then they can be off for a small percentage of the total number of days. They do get £100 bonuses if they return to College in the January and again in September of next year ,just for coming back. My daughter got £300 in three seperate payments.0 -
We are just above the earnings limit, and now have 2 children at college and only help we get is child benefit, doesnt go far when the bus fares alone are £10 each per week. No allowances for more than one going into further education0

EMA is totally unfait. It's not tied in with any tax credit system so doesn't take into account your current financial situation. It is all based on last tax year's income. My husband and I were both working last year but he was then made redundant. Since then we have been claiming working family tax credit based on my income alone. As the EMS was based on last years earnings my son only gets £10 per week. Conversely, if the situation had been reversed, and we were earning the equivalent of £30,000 per year at the moment, my son would be getting full whack EMA. It is so unfair. There is no course for appeal, that is that. EMA tell me.0

You are too old for the EMA ...
If you were studying non advanced qualifications full time, you may be eligible for the Adult Learning Grant. However, full time study would exempt you from other benefits, so you are probably better to stay as you are ...
