I agree that's what it's there for and it must depend on the type of job and how long before the time off needs to be arranged. Each to their own but as I say it seems unusual to me. It probably depends on how much holidays you get and how flexible the employer(s) are.

Not being cheeky but how do you have an anniversary when you aren't married?

Quite obviously, the anniversary of when we got together.

When we get married the wedding anniversary will supercede it (thought will probably still acknowledge it). We are even planning something special for a little landmark this year, why not?

Did you never celebrate an anniversary before you got married? I won't be getting married but I still like to celebrate my relationship with my boyfriend each year.

It's the one day per year that is theirs for them to be who they are, feel special, enjoy themselves, because every other day of the year they will be slaving away for somebody else.

I think we should be allowed to sacrifice one public holiday to be off on our birthdays.

I have never worked or went to school (as far back as I can remember) on my birthday. It's the first day I apply for when I get my annual leave. It's my day and no one should be allowed to make me feel miserable on that day.

Yes, other people celebrate their birthdays on the same day as others.

I don't think this teaches children anything bad, people are just dramatising.

Some people celebrate the anniversary of when they met

For example a friend of mine has been with her partner for 15 years and has 3 kids and isnt married, but they are engaged

They still celebrate the anniversary of when they first got together as Im sure lots of people do

Not everyone wants to get married and even people who do want to celebrate being together.

Totally fine but the usual expectation when someone says anniversary is of the marriage which is what took me by surprise. :o
    Re marriage and anniversaries

Just waiting for the person to pop on the thread who said that everyone who sleeps with someone when they arent married are promiscuous

I absolutely understand that some people believe that only anniversaries should be celebrated by people who are married

But some of us dont share that view.

I don't believe not being married makes you promiscuous, that's terrible. I also think people can celebrate whatever they want but accept that if someone says anniversary the default is a wedding anniversary unless stated.

Not at all obvious as 'got together' can mean first date to moving in and stages in between.

I don't agree, a wedding anniversary implies that. Anniversary can mean many things, most celebrate the anniversary of the start of their relationship, as above, did you not do so before you married? As you knew I wasn't married, it's (to me) obvious I meant our 'relationship anniversary' - though normally just referred to as anniversary.

Got together was the day he asked me to be his girlfriend, we were still at school so it was v clear cut.

No I didn't, not least as by a year after our first date we'd been engaged for six months and were getting married in another six.

It seems to me that a relationship like mine which doesn't involve a long period before or instead of marriage doesn't feel the need to mark anything other than the date of the marriage.

My husband never went to school on his birthday simply because of when it falls and I presume that may go for you as well.

Of course you can reserve a day's holiday if you want and the employer allows but I do think it can set a dangerous precedent taking a child out of school.

OP - Sorry for taking the thread off topic. :(

Well, if you weren't together very long then there would be no need.

What would the child have been doing at school? By the end of this week my 14yo will have had varied days when he's gone from sitting exams, to being able able to attend school, but his classes may not be taken by a specialised subject teacher due to strike action, to going to a climbing wall at the leisure centre.
  • I wouldve loved to be at school on my birthday. See my friends, have name called out in assembly and people around to attend party However 12th Aug is never going to be in english school term

If a teacher chose to take the day off that fell on a school day on their own birthday there would be uproar. Especially from the parents.
