Teachers dont take sick days unless they are collapsed in bed - otherwise they drag themselves in to work. Teacher just dont get mid-week days off but can arrange for an appointment at 4pm so can still do mid-weeky stuff.

Teachers are all different- some never take sick days, some drag themselves in regardless, others prefer not to infect the rest of the school-and as for these 4pm appointments- not all teachers live where they work (and many do so as a deliberate choice to seperate work/home). Plus we often see teachers proclaiming that just because the school day finishes at 3.30pm it doesn't mean their day finishes then and they are still at school at 6pm.

Teachers are not all the same

I've often wondered if teachers are allowed to take days off during term time, particularly considering the amount of leave that they already get.
    Does anyone know?

At my school the Head will authorise a day for certain circumstances (funeral or Consultant hospital appointment) but you are expected to use the holidays for all other appointments if possible and you wouldn't be allowed time for a wedding in term time.

The school admin staff have it particularly bad as they work full time (not term time) all year round yet they can only take their holidays in school holiday time so the worst of both worlds! No school holiday perk and no holidays in term time.

A teacher friend of mine recently did.

What reason did they give their employer?

When I started work at a school I had a holiday already booked which was 4 days off work. The school didn't bat an eyelid and said as it was prebooked of course I could still take it.

    Are you a teacher?

They swapped it for another, as they don't usually work Mondays.

My birthday always fell in the Christmas holidays so was never an issue. However, now I'm working we're not allowed time off in December - I think I've had it off once in 10 years (when it fell on a Sunday).

Well that's slightly different if they've managed to arrange appropriate cover from an existing part time post.

If a teacher wants to request time away from teaching, it has to be authorised for cover. A teacher simply wanting to take time away from teaching on a whim is simply not going to be authorised. Any normal teacher would never book holiday during term time because it simply would not be authorised either. Teachers are given term dates a year in advance. They should plan their holidays and time off around that. Arranging cover for a class is not ideal and is not something that should ever be taken lightly.

As for schools not doing any work right now, I can assure you that all of my GCSE classes are working hard right up until the end of the year.

Urgh! Sorry for spelling/grammar errors. I'm using the microphone to post and it's awful!

Well, as many schools are shut whenever there's voting, closed if more than three snowflakes fall, some have been shut for the Tour de France, and many round here are shut today, because if the teacher's strike, it doesn't appear to worry schools to much when it suits them to give children a day off!

On that basis, I would say it's pretty harmless if a child wants their birthday off, and up to the parents.
