The time ( and often human loss) we have put in to ' waste' for art and belief or preference has always been one of our little 'foibles'.
I agree - the sheer cost of the amazing medieval cathedrals is another example; the percentage of GDP they took at a time when the economy was very limited and low-production was insane, but they did it anyway. It will, in fact it's today for me. I've noticed a lot of apolitical English mates posting things on Facebook along the lines of, Please Don't Go Scotland. If the vote was across the UK then Scotland would be going nowhere I suspect.
My Dad's adamant he's vote "Yes" if he could - but he becomes more anti-establishment and ant-heap-kicking as he gets older, rather than the reverse which is, I think, more normal.Doozergirl wrote: »Has anyone seen that nice Victoria Sponge I bought earlier? It's gone missing
You can't buy a Victoria sponge - they are so quick and easy to make, honestly! Hurl a few ingredients into a bowl all at once, mix and cook for 20 minutes. Quicker than going out to buy one....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
Blimey, scintillating stuff. Huw Edwards has just asked Andrew Marr (in Edinburgh) what's going to happen, and he's said that they're going to be counting votes!!
And they've all got high-vis jackets on.
Apparently it's a campaign like he's never seen in his lifetime (durr, yes, it's a first-in-300 years and not just the 20th century).
Wasn't there a referendum in about 1980, though?
I like Huw Edwards - don't like Andrew Marr, though, he's far too much of an appalling hypocrite for my taste.
I feel a bit sorry for them, having to blether non-stop about nothing for hours!...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
My council leader (who can be a bit of a twit at times) has been angling for a Yorkshire regional assembly. As I said, he's a bit of a ... We'd still be beholden to London for finance, we'd be beholden to the more urban areas of Yorkshire for decision making, we'd have to pay lots of money to support this additional layer of bureaucracy, and I don't see the point.
The NE rejected the idea in a ballot a few years ago and the idea hasn't improved since ...
Yep, Yorkshire has pretty much the same size population as Scotland. A lot of people think if the Scots have it, why shouldn't we?
I agree though, I think it's a bit pointless. I'm disappointed the political leaders have all promised 'extra powers' to Scotland tbh.“I could see that, if not actually disgruntled, he was far from being gruntled.” - P.G. Wodehouse0 -

You might be right about a 1980 referendum - AM said there hadn't been anything like it in his lifetime or the C20 but that isn't the same as there being nothing happening at all, I guess.
Yes, I do feel sorry for them having to fill non-stop, without even the luxury of commercial breaks which ITV have :beer:0 -
This news coverage reminds me a little of the 6 hours of footage of the door of the hospital from which wills and kate were "just about" to emerge with their newborn... I could sit here for another half day and not learn anything new!0

I looked it up, and was wrong in two respects - it was in 1979, and was about devolution rather than independence....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0

Just checked. Both R5L and R4 have the same radio programme so absolutely no escaping to R4 as is my usual practice if R5L gets me too het up. Grr.0

Speaking of newborns, how is Mrs Chewie?...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

Ah right - still pretty important, though, and laid the foundations for where we are today, I guess.0
