Only away since Tuesday, but it feels like a long time.
    Lydia how are you doing?

    Inquest finished on Wednesday.
I am basically fine apart from being very depleted.
But then I am often depleted at the end of the summer holidays.
Back to work and some semblance of normal life soon - a bit tomorrow and then properly on Tuesday. Will probably do me good.

    Happy Birthday Maggie!

Youngest has gone into panic stations, he has found out the friends who should be on the bus with him tomorrow morning are going in in the afternoon (they were given either a morning or afternoon induction, youngest has to go in in the morning and his friends have to go in in the afternoon). So now he is in a right old panic and I am not entirely convinced he will get on the bus and if he does, he will be in a right state by the time he arrives at the college.

Coupled with that, he doesn't know what the routine will be, where he has to go, who he will be meeting and the minute by minute plan for the morning....hmm, methinks I will have to ring the college first thing to see what they can do/have planned/warn them. He is certainly not the sort to 'go with the flow' unlike James who prefers 'go with the flow' over the completely and absolutely timed perfection that youngest would prefer.

Hoping for the best for tomorrow.

Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Dissertation done. Printed it at 5.30pm, but it still needs binding. Deadline is 4pm tomorrow, but I'm going into town super early to get it done and handed in, not taking chances.

I keep thinking since I have tonight in theory I should be working on it, do another read through, but I'm fed up of it. I think I should probably add to the conclusion, but I can't see it making too much difference.

Just want to forget the whole thing.

Not much else to add, but CIPD portfolio still due on Friday, made a good start on that. Really need to get back on the job applications.

    Well done. :T:T:T

No, you should not be working on it tonight. You have finished it. Now you need to have a break from it. :)

    Fantastic! Well done you!

Agreed. 23 hours before the deadline is impressive.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Does RP put used mugs in DW or leave them lying about for you to collect up later?

People are strange about dishwashers - the most mild-mannered of people get all "my way or the highway" about them IME. And do strange things, too.

My mother likes to wash everything sparkly clean and then put it on a 20 min 10 degrees C lick-and-a-promise wash, and gets all upset if anyone puts it on a normal proper temperature.
It's also good for cold mash. I make enough mash for two meals, the 2nd portion's boxed up and put into the fridge. How do non-microwave people re-heat cold mash? ... or do you use (another) saucepan, that then needs washing up.

I've never in my life wanted to heat up mashed potato on its own. Only if it is, say, on top of a fish pie and you need to cook the whole thing.

    (We don't have a microwave).

My parents' Aga is very safe if you leave something in it. It's easy to do, as unlike a normal oven you can't smell burning stuff except outside, so it just turns gently to carbon.

My first proper date with my first boyfriend was to the cinema to see Room with a View.

My first proper date was seeing Measure for Measure. It was a great production, but the relationship didn't last very long.

My first proper date was going to a posh restaurant where I sampled champagne and steak for the very first time.

The relationship didn't last all that long as he met someone else and we were better as friends but it was at a party he held 2 days after we split that I met now ex husband and the rest is history....without that boyfriend, I would not now have my wonderful and amazing three children as I was going to go off to London and have a career, children were most def not in my plans!
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.
  • Blackberry Preserves (for LemonJelly)

I consulted my mother, as she's much better at all cooking that I am. She agrees with me that blackberry jam isn't ideal, because it ends up very pippy. Blackberry jelly is a better option, as you get the flavour and lovely colour without pips stuck between your teeth.

There are essentially two main options - blackberry on its own, or blackberry-and-apple jelly. The flavours are a bit different. The advantage from a cooking point of view of making the plus-apple version is that apples are a good source of pectin.

Pectin is the stuff that makes jams or jellies set. Some fruits are high in pectin naturally such as apples. Others, like strawberries, are really low in pectin. Blackberries are pretty low in pectin, so you either need to add extra pectin, or use apples as well.

Equipment - you need a large pan, with a thick bottom. This is because fruits / jams / jellies need room, and a thick bottom stops the sugar catching at high temperatures.

You also need jars (cleaned coffee / mayonnaise / whatever jars are fine) with lids, and wax circles which you can buy in a supermarket.

A slatted large spoon is useful, as is a wooden spoon with a long handle.

A jelly bag. You can buy one, and they aren't expensive or you can double over clean muslin and line a large sieve with it.

Jam funnel - cheap, and almost essential

    1. Blackberry and apple jelly

Use half-and-half weights of blackberries and apples. Cooking apples, windfalls, they are all fine. Whatever you can get free or very cheap.

Wash the blackberries carefully, and remove most of the insects. Cut out rotten bits of the apples and chop into chunks - no need to remove the core or skin, it's all useful stuff.

Add 2 tablespoons of lemon juice per pound of fruit.

Put your apples and blackberries in your large pan, and add cold water to just cover the fruit; no more than just covering. Heat gently, and when it comes to the boil allow it to simmer very quietly, until all the fruit is really mushy. Stir a bit, from time to time, to make sure the fruit doesn't stick to the bottom.

When it is very mushy, stop cooking it (my mother reckons about 40 minutes for 3lb each of blackberries / apples) and decant into the jelly bag and leave to drip for hours or overnight. On no account squeeze the bag at all, as this will cause your jelly to be cloudy.

Next day - measure your liquid. Put it back into your cleaned heavy, large pan, and add 1lb granulated white sugar per 1 pint of liquid. Heat very gently and stir softly until all the sugar is dissolved.

Once you are sure the sugar's all dissolved, bring to a rolling boil - this means that it is boiling very vigorously and bubbling up, from underneath. Add a knob of butter (which helps to get rid of foam) and skim the surface for foam with a spoon.

Test for set - the easiest way to do this is to stash a couple of saucers in the fridge. Take one out after a few minutes rolling boil, ladle a small amount of the juice onto it and swirl it around. When it's cool, if it's ready it will wrinkle as you push your finger against the surface.

Put your jars in the oven on a baking sheet or similar to sterilise them.

Once your jelly's ready to set, whip out the jars, and ladle the jelly into them via the funnel. Add a wax circle quickly, and finish all the jars. Wait about half an hour, then screw the lids on.

    2. Blackberry only jelly - as above, but you should either buy powdered pectin, or use jam sugar which has it added already.
