So, mayhem that's been signed off by a manager is okay, then? It's not mayhem? But the same thing done on personal initiative is mayhem.
You see how confusing this IT business is for people who are not part of the clique?
If it's signed off then it becomes part of the usual procedure: it's on the system, item sourced and provided, they know who fitted it. System asset register is updated. Next time you call in with a problem they know that stuff..... or, do it yourself, c0ck it up, with memory bought from ebay ... and it's all gone to c0ck.
In some organisations the equipment is provided by a 3rd party. Got a new starter? 3rd party company supplies it, built to a "standard build" written down in the contract agreed with the senior management 3 years ago - it goes on the asset register, company are charged monthly for it ... IT plug it in and away you go.
The company then know what equipment they have, what spec it is .... as part of the entire asset management system for the value of the company too.
They can also spot troubles "since we put that RAM in on floor 4", so an exceptions report can flag up "lots of issues on floor 4" and when they check, they'll see that over the last 3 months they've upgraded the RAM for everybody ... which then checks back to one batch, which turns out to be faulty.0 -
I sometimes wonder if I killed my IT department whether I'd get a jail sentence or a round of applause.0

IT Depts are misunderstood.... they're caught in the middle. Their job is to run the infrastructure first, individual PCs second .... based on their workload, what they're allowed to do .... and with shedloads of OLAs and SLAs being monitored..... and the Director always coming first because "he's the Director" and there's always one 4rse licker that gets his stuff prioritised.
You need to become a Director, then you can have/do what you want (and not even be in the building most of the week!)
Once you log a call the clock starts - and everything the IT dept do is monitored and flagged up if it's late. Of course, one of the problems might be that the person initially logging the call is a call logger, with no IT experience at all... just logging the call. "Have you tried a reboot?" is a GENUINE fixer of 30% of issues. "Have you checked the network cable?" is a GENUINE fixer of 5% of issues.
IT are caught between numpty users, password forgetters - and people who think they should have their PC spec'd specially "because they're special"......
I set up a huge weekly report some years ago, that would churn out exceptions reports, so long-standing issues, or clusters of problems, or one user with problems, could be identified and nailed. It's easy for an IT Dept to fix the individual problems of a user, without comprehending that the user's phoning in 3x a week and actually has a hardware failure - exceptions reporting flags that up0 -
Sounds debilitating and demoralising...this may be one of those days when it is best to decide to do whatever is the best thing to conserve what energy you have and minimise discomfort. Not chores, not anything stretching but gentle, calming, relaxing, pleasant. Any unpleasant interruptions from people..tell them , today is not a day when you can help.
Its really not so bad. Just achey rather than the sudden stabbing ones.
Main things I am doing to day are washing bedlinen and trying to make a new recipe for something. I cannot find anything that similar on line so its mainly thinking, which I've been doing for a couple of days. Simple, though, so should only be twenty minutes or so standing time.
My dear friend from another thread here, who has become a very treasures RL friend!, thinks she has a stool that might work for me, so I can stir while sitting, ( one of the things that causes problems with preserves is the bloody standing)0 -
It's a bit like blaming the dinner ladies that there's only ever one soup on offer..... instead of working out who makes those decisions, why they're made, then working with those people to find a way to make two soups available within the same constraints.0

I didn't take stalker notes of holiday dates of NPs who are starting today .... but this is close to where Spirit will be, so could go on the "what to do" list

When I say "close" it's an hour's drive and 35 miles... and parking is limited/bit of a problem as it can involve a bit of a walk, but they probably put on a minibus.
As for those that smugly got an early start from Herts .... fire farqs up plans of an easy drive http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-essex-288931080 -

That would have helped us by reducign traffic on our bit of the M25 - had we left early...but we haven't left yet. In fact it is a Mexican standoff - I have put into the car the things we need - clothes and bedding and now the kids have to decide which of the ten bags each (of toys, cushions, soft toys, shoes, kitchen sinks, etc) they have assembled they are actually going to take, that being all there is room for.I think....0 -
Mrs Generali has told me not to accept any money.
Thank you so much for the gesture. I really appreciate it. You lot were there for me when a lot of people that should have been were not.0
