I've had two presents from him, ever. Both books. The first was Foxes' Book of Martyrs, an 1820s edition that he bought when I was doing A level (Tudor) history. The second was Other Men's Flowers, a fantastic poetry anthology.

I remember you are a fellow owner of ' other men's flowers'. It really is IMO, the anthology to have over all others. There has always been a copy in my family home, and I have my own.0 -

We had the Thermomix party this arvo. It was ok. The woman made some really speedy food which was quite fun and very low waste. For example she made a nice fruit sorbet with some fruit that was on the turn. It's all quite expensive for what it does although it is very good.
Then afterwards I got a text message from The Boy's soccer coach who had arranged an impromptu kick about: a bunch of lads and a few Dads playing football in the park as the sun set. One of the Dads was the Aussie Finance Minister! The actual one, not some deputy or junior or something. He was a lot of fun and took my question, "Was that a step over or an air shot?", with a big grin.
Now we're home and I'm nursing aches and pains with a glass of cheap white while the chook and roast veggies cooks.0 -

You only think that because you don't understand how Australia works. If you volunteerdoesn't of local fire brigade and happen to live in a particular area you'll be fighting fires with the current PM. Pollies are just normal people here in their everyday life.
I've met Joe a couple of times as his kids are the same age as mine and he lives in the next suburb along so we end up in the same places. He doesn't have bodyguards or anything like that I've ever noticed.0 -

Haha! Totoro. Love that movie.
(Wheezy westie is named after a character out of another Hayao Miyazaki movie)0 -

The posh alert is that you live in an area close to somebody "that high up" and in one that's still posh enough for him to "do his bit" so to speak. If you were an aborigine dad, living in a tent, in a "problem area", you'd not see him, or his type, in kick-abouts0 -

Not if I was living in a tent but my FiL worked in a school in a pretty crappy area and as a result is mates with an ex-NSW Premier (one of the longest serving modern ones).
He lives in a part of Sydney that all the other bits joke about how 'chavvy' (bogan) it is.
Most people in Aus don't go for airs and graces. Most Brits living here are very happy to have gotteb away from the silly idea that some people are posh and others aren't. Joe might be Finance Minister but he's a crap soccer player and an attentive Dad. He's just the same as me in Aussie society really.0 -

Blue would suit you very well, I think? Or do you just not like it?
I rather like this (but I'm rubbish at clothes):
I like it too, but it think might be too much? Dunno. Most of the room will be in black......evening suits, or
[
Blue is a beautiful colour, as a colour I love it. It has a personal connotation, like cold metals, that sits some what uncomfortably.
That's a beautiful dress I think, but in thing will be too much . The room will be full of dark colours. Lots of people will be in evening suits, and lots in academic gowns. I think some thing dark, but not black, and quite understated is my best bet, ( though that's as not me as blue and silver, lol. Not dark, I wear black happily! )0
