Stylish NP.
I am bored to distraction of dresses and got distracted on to a sofa that badly needs attention.
Its varnish is coming of and some of the wood is chipped and we are toying with painting instead of re varnishing ( varnish is currently a sort of yellow colour we presume is meant to indicate 'yew' or something. Covers are nasty brown velvet type thing.
I'd quite like to cover in very, very coarse linen. The very finest I'm thinking is something like this. http://shop.tinsmiths.co.uk/Natural-Fabric/Washed-Linen/-39-Irish-Linen-39-Lichen/prod_37.html..
But would consider something much coarser. They have much coarser ones on that website
It needs new cushions. We have one seat cushion and one back cushion. We're consider in having just one long seat cushion. But we don't want it to flip up like a banana if some one sits in the middle! Also, thinking of ditching back ones altogether.
Its a very low sofa. Its in the kitchen, if that makes any difference.
Paint or varnish.
Is coarse linen mad?

I prefer the indigo colour. http://shop.tinsmiths.co.uk/Tumbled-linen-curtain-fabric/prod_1537.html
Presumably, you renovate and recover because you want to, not because it makes sense financially? No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -

We have the sofa, why wouldn't we recover it? We like it, it was dh's mothers. It cannot stay as it is with missing cushions! Have no idea how much a replacement would cost, never bought one. Don't need too, we have this one. It needs cushions and reupholstering and a bit of tlc.0 -

I'd be wondering about the practicality of coarse linen in a kitchen... Food getting mashed into the weave, stuff like that. How close is it to food prep areas? And what about the dogs? Might they drag food up onto it?
As to paint and varnish and cushion questions, might be easier to answer those if we had a photo? Though if you're thinking of painting, you might like to ask questions on the Shabby Chic thread?0 -

Opposite end to food prep.
Dogs don't eat on it ever, er, dog dog is curled up on it now. I'll clear her off it and take a pic in day light tomorrow.. Its in a bit of a state. It was a dog sofa in dh's youth too. Their brief period of dog owner ship it lived in the huge hall of their house and the dog slept upon it.
Edit, just tried photos as I thought to dark for whole sofa, but the one of varnish state came out!
GDb, I don't really do blue.. Weird personal thing. I like the one linked below. I adore the one for 12. 50 and I bet its deliciously scratchy ( I like scratchy things...as a plus, dog dog does not) , but also doesn't say its suitable for upholstery
. That would be my favourite. Room is very pale silvery/green, with dark wood, black picture frames, white curtains in Summer and curtain fabric undecided for winter. Matching NOT important. If we went natural brownish painting seems sensible as other wise the wood is lost. Some detail has been scuffed of wood. NOT chewed by dogs. Think maybe by careless moving or something?

Looking at that, I'd be inclined to sand the varnish off and paint, or sugar soap and maybe do that chalk paint stuff they rave about on the shabby chic thread... Here's one example (not a sofa) that looks pretty good to me.
Guess you could paint or chalk paint the wood any colour you fancied - doesn't have to be white! Don't know your kitchen colour scheme, but that pale greeny grey that Nikkster posted about for front door might be nice? Or something similar.

Look .... don't say "Fine filly that one, bet she's frisky between the sheets, I'd show her my little nubbly if she plays her cards right .... 20th hole I'd say - she's probably a 3-pinter "
When I was younger, I once went to a party and a friend told me that it was assumed I was the 'entertainment'. I honestly thought I looked ok, I have never been into wearing low cut, stupidly short clothing. Didn't stay long.Still striving to be mortgage free before I get to a point I can't enjoy it.

That varnish is going to need an awful lot of work. A real labour of love, but if it's a family heirloom ...
Oh, and it's okay not to like blue!No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0
