Have you done the drinking tea thing, where most of the liquid goes over you and not into yet? Always happens to me:cool:

Hm... I've been sipping via the non-numb part of my mouth. So nope. But it was very difficult to rinse out my mouth at the dentist...

I wonder if SCs comments re building costs could be taken as a posh alert.

I suspect I am worth much more dead than alive to DW.

Lydia does repaying your mortgage make sense for inheritance tax planning purposes?
    I think....

What would you suggest I do instead?

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

I've never had it/needed it. I do need to write a Will though as now mum'd get the lot, which doesn't make any sense..... with both parents alive I always took the attitude "well, they'd get it, then they can sort out who has what". Different scenario now.

PN would you like a nice young man come and help put up your shelves? We could also drink tea and I.could listen to your reminiscences.....

So you want to sit and drink tea and chat while a nice young man puts shelves up???

    :)

I've no shelves to put up. Shelves are beyond my ability, so I didn't buy any.

I bought pine shelving units http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/00111994/ - within my capability.

The only way to use the 7 year rule to avoid IHT is to put the money into the children's own names, which would mean they would get control of it certainly by the time they're 18 and probably earlier. Although I have every intention of helping my kids out financially (especially with house deposits) I wouldn't want to give them control of the money until I'm convinced they're responsible enough to be trusted with it. For now, that consideration outweighs the IHT advantages of giving them the money now, especially considering that it's really quite unlikely that I'll die before they're grown up. Actually, even if I die, they won't get control of the money that I leave until they're 25. Too much unearned money too young is not a good idea, IMO.
