Re the abyss, can you get one of those hair traps and put it in the hole? Something like this...

That was my first thought - then I thought any plug solution would fail to work as there'd no longer be a seal ... and, together, they'd start to look awful/cumbersome too. It'd all be a bit too Heath Robinson.

It's just a horrid thing that you're doing something (cleaning your teeth), above an Abyss..... and you don't want to look down what is effectively a drain, nor think of yourself brushing your teeth directly into a drain ...... and the biggie .... what if you suddenly see something move, or see an eye there....?

Maybe I should add ... the spout/viakal thing didn't go onto "the list". I actually ran off and did it immediately. I don't know if it's improved waterflow, but then I realised .... the problem wasn't waterflow, the problem was splashback :)

Oh well ..... it's a job done anyway.... but now my fingers stink of viakal :(

OK, I'm guessing the gaping hole is because it should have a pop-up waste in it. So, first question, do you have a pop up waste and it doesn't seal properly (therefore it just needs adjusting so it sits better) or do you not have a pop up waste at all (ie it is missing completely)

A pop up waste has a chrome top that is the bit that shows in the plug hole, is probably about 3-4 inches long and cylindrical shape, though probably with the sides missing.

Life is cheap in some parts of the world

Er... which was my point. Not being in those parts of the world in the first place is the most sensible survival strategy.

Yes it is a pop up waste. It is in place, it works perfectly ... well .... no problem really. The problem is that the waterflow hits the top of the pop up waste (whether it's up or down) and then sprays you all down the front in a fine spray.... so it is a combination problem of the tap not being the smoothest to turn on/off, the head having a spray, the pop up waste being in direct line of the spray.

If you remove the pop up (to try to solve the "getting soaked" issue, there's then a gaping abyss)

Maybe the easiest solution is to remove the bit that makes the water spray....?

One good reason to buy the smallest house that's feasible: Ultimately, everything needs cleaning. Every inch. Every floor, every wall, every door, every item.

Every square inch has to be touched by something to clean it at some point .... some things daily, some weekly, some monthly .... but every square inch at some point.

There's an awful lot of inches in a house :)

Hi pastures, there may me a little metal grille on the tap, like the filter on a kettle. It gets clogged and the water comes out in a spray. Can you see if there is one? If it is clogged up, viakal won't clear it easily. The simplest is just to remove the little grille. It will be just inside the spout.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

I think they're designed to come out in a spray .... rather than because it's clogged. I might take a small screwdriver to the sides/edges of it a bit later ... having blocked up the abyss so it doesn't disappear down the plughole if it suddenly springs free.

The trouble with trying to take anything apart is - it's easy once you know if you should have turned, twisted, pulled, levered, popped, or banged it .... and by how much force. Up to the point where you have a good result, or a breakage, you don't know how it'll go :)

Often I am doing the right thing, but not applying enough force as I'm too scared to give it an extra shove in case I'm doing it wrong and it'll just break.
