It's different in London. The rush hour trains are so unreliable that you simply couldn't sack people for being late.

I once got a call from a colleague at 2pm as his train had finally gotten out of the tunnel it had been in since 10:30am. From 7:30-10:30 he'd been on the platform.

In a large office you can tell who is lying about the trains because there are only so many routes in. Why is X late when Y gets the same train?

The colleague part sounds like the absolute day from hell.

As long as everyone is reasonably on time and does about the right hours, I'm fine with occasional lateness now, unless they're aware that something needs to be done by a certain time with no exceptions (although those people generally have vehicles anyway)
Grads and newbies on the other hand need to be in on time regardless, even if that means leaving at 3am etc. You need to build a reputation of being on time at all costs before you can be late.

This is the theory I try to go by. I think I've been late for meetings about twice in the last 10 years, both times because I've been held up in traffic, usually because the M11 has been closed at the other office, so I've had to get onto the A10 then M25 back to M11 J6.

I can't use that excuse any more, as I don't use the M11 now :(

NP "not a house warming gift" received :)

Postman arrived while I was faffing around with the bike/shed.

    Thanks :)

    Very cheery.

Poor darling Kermie has just caught his first cold. I've got it too, but I'm not as confused and bothered by it as he is. He keeps trying to feed, then looks really puzzled, "why can't I breathe and have milk at the same time? Normally I can!". He's not a happy camper.

I was just wondering why he'd not got your immunity, and then you answered it. You were not immune either.

Finally logged in but lost all settings so each time I start an office app it runs loads of setup stuff. There also seems to be a new AV icon in the task bar, on a PC with only 512k of ram that has got to be bad news. Only in the govt sector would they waste 100ks or low productivity to save a few hundred on decent PCs.....

My PCs got 1GB of RAM ... and hardly any HD space. I've been using CCleaner about 5x a day to keep it nodding along... and it was consistently cleaning 100MB... but earlier today there was an XP update which I clicked "install then shut down" just as I was going out .... and now I seem to be running low on disk space and having to use CCleaner every 30MB.

Now I am here and I've found my ExtHDD maybe it's time to jiggle some stuff about.

This is hot. I've been hot before, but never this hot - and never for so long. I honestly couldn't work if I were in an office, I'd have collapsed a week ago.

Since I came back from the bike shop I've got a teatowel and wetted it with cold water and wiped myself down, then kept re-wetting the teatowel and alternating between lying down with it over my head/arms and wiping my face/arms/neck/chest.

Soooo hot .... and whatever I'm doing I am simply not able to cool down.

I used to have great body temperature-righting abilities.... does this change with age?

If you made a post on these boards saying "Sacked for being late...." they'd lay into you and tell you you need to leave the house at 3am and walk to work to ensure you get there on time, no excuses.... :)

A lot of views on these boards don't recognise real life.

I knew quite a few tenants who had to leave properties because their landlord was selling up. Once the property was sold they moved out at whatever inconvenience to themselves. On these boards sellers are told not to exchange until the place is empty, buyers are told to be wary of tenanted properties, tenants are told they can ignore S21s and stay put. Nothing like real life at all.

All three are technically like real life, but are completely incompatible with each other, and I think that this is the main issue in the legislation as it is now.

I'd never buy somewhere to live without vacant possession, which leaves the seller in a difficult position of having to farm out the tenants before exchange etc etc.

It's the nightmare that is the world.

Might be connected with smoking. As your arteries narrow, your blood can't get around your body as quickly. That may impact on your body's ability to lose heat.
