Bed time for teenagers

Just thought I'd ask your advice. What time do you think is a reasonable bed time for teenagers? I have a 15 year old and a 13 year old and they both have to be in bed by 9.30pm.

They are both starting to complain a bit that ' all their friends stay up later'.

Now I dont normally take any notice of these cries but just wondered what you all thought would be a reasonable time.

When I was a teenager, I had to go to bed at 8:30 pm because I had younger siblings and I had to show a good example. I hated that, so....

I let my DD go to bed when she wants because she is very sensible and she usually is in bed by 10:30pm. Anyway sometimes, she has so much homework that making her go to bed earlier would mean no relaxation time in the evening.

I find that most of her friends go to bed around that time, some even later:eek:

IMO, 9.30pm is too early for a 15 year old. I'd say around 10-10.30pm would be better..

I wake them between 7 and 7.15 am......that gives them about an hour before school.

They are allowed to stay up a bit later on a Friday and Saturday but its still about 10 pm.

I'm never late in bed myself as I have to be up at 6.30ish for work.

I agree. I used to go to bed at 10-10.30pm when I was that age. I don't think I could have got to sleep if I had gone to bed any earlier.

By the time I'd had dinner and done all my homework it would be about 9pm so I'd want to watch TV to unwind for a while.

whats the reasoning for the early bed time? do they get grumpy if they dont get over 9 hours sleep everynight? you worried about leaving them up when you go to bed? as said above 10-10.30 would seem normal

My just turned 14 year old decides his own bedtime. He is very sensible and may stay up til about 10 -10.30 some school nights, but then others he will go about 9 - 9.30 (sometimes even earlier if he feels tired). Weekends I let all 3 of mine (8, 10 and 14) decide their own bedtime.

I rarely have to wake my boys up in the morning though (unless the younger ones have had a late night). They get up around 7am usually.

To be honest I didnt consider it an early bed time.....I would have thought that if they were getting too much sleep, they would wake earlier in the morning?? Which they dont do. ( or it that just teenagers?)

Recommendations are that older teens get 9 hours sleep a night. With this in mind I would suggest the 13 year olds bed time is acceptable and maybe allow the 15 year old to stay up half an hour later.

On a weekend, my DS ( the 15 year old) usually wakes between 8 and 9 ish but my DD will normally sleep till I wake her!!!!
