5k is not too far, just build it up steadily, start with a 2k run, then get used to that, and steadily increase it. You'll be surprised how quickly you can get into it.

if you are following couch25k you wont start with a 2km run, it will be short rotations of running/walking with the runs being about a minute long

if you don't have any underlying health issues anyone should be capable of doing 5k after 9 weeks following the program

I completed c25k successfully earlier this year. Went on holiday and stopped running, so I'm back again having started at week 3 I'm going to embark on week 5 this weekend. I know I can do it as i've done it before, but I won't have my dog who was my running partner, so need to find another way to keep the motivation up!

would signing up for a 5 or 10k event provide motivation?

doesn't need to be anything fancy or serious, if you have a local park run you can register online anytime before then just turn up

I've been toying with that idea. I can't do park runs because there aren't any near me and my husband works weekends so i have no car at the time of day!

I'm looking for a 5k to begin with, the only one i have found is a halloween one and people jump out at you and I'm a wuss.... But, probably best to get me signed up to something.... i keep getting carried away and thinking I should register for a half marathon.

registering for a half marathon isn't a bad idea - it would mean you had something to train for over 2-3 months

I've just completed week 1 of c25k, this is about the third time I've attempted it and never got further than week 3! Off to France at the end of next week do aiming to complete weeks 3-4 in France!

I've had a c25k app on my phone for ages but used the excuse of being tired and having too much work to do to not do it. I'm contemplating starting next week, though I'm on holiday the week after and although lots of exercise (walking in the mountains, swimming in the pool) is planned for that week so I don't know whether to leave it and stick with Aqua Zumba and a few lengths for next week. Hoping that if I start good habits in the holidays, they'll continue during termtime!

I've decided I'm going to, probably the bath half. It's March 1st, which gives me time to complete c25k again by end of August, the 5 - 10k training plan is 6 weeks, and then a half marathon plan is 12 weeks, which would give me plenty of time to be totally confident and ready for a half marathon early next year.

I'm going to run on behalf of either Guide Dogs or Marie Curie for extra motivation too.

    Hi everyone,

Hope you don't mind me popping along :)

I took up running just yesterday and I've also started with the couch to 5k. To spur me on, I've also registered to enter a 3k fun run on the 17th August! Obviously this doesn't give me very long but I'm hoping it will help to spur me on.

I found yesterday really tough, but it did get easier as the session went on. I'm actually looking forward to going again tomorrow and have also signed up to Park Run today so that I can do that as soon as I feel able :)
