We looked at over 50 venues for our wedding reception around the north west - think we must have seen everything in the lakes! I don't know what your budget is, but here are some of the ones that we thought stood out:

Netherwood Hotel, Grange over Sands - this is where we had our reception so have to mention it, the staff were brilliant, lovely venue and grounds:T

Low Wood Hotel, Windermere - heard loads of good things about it, we loved it. But they just didn't have suitable rooms for our requirements.

Beech Hill Hotel, Windermere - was due to be fully renovated and redecorated in summer 2005, not seen it since but assume it is still as nice.

Garstang Hotel and Country Club - another good reputation, been to a few weddings there myself, v nice.

    Barton Grange Hotel, Preston

The Waterhead, Ambleside - mentioned this as you said you wanted newly decorated. This is v modern, beautiful spot.

    Castle Green Hotel, near Cumbria

    The Inn at Whitewell

    Whoop Hall, nr Kirkby Lonsdale

That's it off the top of my head. Don't worry keep searching, you will find the perfect venue and it will be worth it ;)

Just been to look round Cottons Hotel and Spa and fell more in love with it than what I'd seen on their website.

It's the best by far out of the places I've looked at and OH says so too. It's also the one he seemed most relaxed with and not as if he'd been dragged out to do something he didn't want to do.

Their indoor courtyard was lovely - so different from the normal function room. And the man who showed us round was really nice and friendly - something I haven't been impressed at with other places. Some had made me feel like I was inconveniencing them.

He says we can pretty much do what we like and adjust the menus to suit - again something other venues didn't seem to want to do.

May be a touch on the expensive side but nothing out of the ordinary from other hotels and their prices. The benefit to us is they offer festive discounts which will reduce the price a bit. He also agreed we could have the prices up to Oct 08 even though we'll be getting married in Nov 08 which is a bonus.

Just have to work out how to fund it now!

    Hi

We got married at the Gibbon Bridge Hotel at Chipping near Clitheroe and it was fantastic. You can get married either within the hotel, or in the grounds on their bandstand (which we did) in the gardens and the setting is beautiful: superb for photos!

They have a number of rooms for the reception ranging from smaller private rooms to the beautiful conservatory restaurant with panoramic views of the gardens.

We had a small wedding there (24 guests) so had the smaller upstairs reception room for the meal, but the room has a beautiful fireplace and comfy sofas for relaxing afterwards aswell as the formal dining area. (We stayed overnight and then had a church blessing and bigger reception the next day nearer to home).

The staff are total professionals and the hotel have hosted some pretty major weddings and social events there so they know what they're doing. It is on the pricey side, but our friends and family were talking about it literally for a couple of years afterwards, it was just so perfect. (We're just coming up to our 10th anniversary!)

Most of the hotel rooms are split level suites and are very impressive, though again a bit on the pricey side. But there are lots of alternative accommodations nearby if some guests don't want to pay top price.

Hope this is of some help, and good luck with your planning!
