Middle Lane Hoggers - I hate them!
Why do you hog the middle lane? I hate you for it.
The middle lane is only for overtaking slower moving vehicles travelling in the inside lane so why oh why do so many drivers spend almost all their journey in that lane.

Start a club and buy an old ex police car from the US. The ones with bumpers made to help them move over a bit.
Give them a nudge to help them take the inside lane? Works in the US.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Because they know that they will have to pull out again in another 5 miles because there will be a vehicle in the inside lane so it seems really pointless to move to the inside lane0

Because they are people like my mother who are scared of changing line, scared of lorries overtaking them and so as soon as possible get into the middle lane and trundle along at their preferred speed (60 in my mothers case) and damn anyone else.
Hopefully she'd have a few tickets by now since the law changes but I doubt she goes on them often enough.
I've come to ignore them, if the inside lane is clear and its the one I'm in, I wont move out to overtake them when I can continue in the inside lane at a constant speed without any obstructions/ slow moving vehicles ahead0 -

Whichever, it's probably the safest lane for them to be in. Safer for the rest of us, I mean.
If that's their attitude / issues probably best they stay off motorways altogether.Because they know that they will have to pull out again in another 5 miles because there will be a vehicle in the inside lane so it seems really pointless to move to the inside lane
If i drive in the inside lane and approach someone in the middle lane, i need to go from the inside, to the middle to the outside, back to the middle and back to the inside again for it to be a legal overtake.
Them thinking it's "pointless" means i then have to move twice the amount of lanes i'd need to if they were driving correctly.
If everyone followed their lead everyone would drive in the middle lane, and we'd have an empty lane doing nothing and only one overtaking lane instead of two.InsideInsurance wrote: »Because they are people like my mother who are scared of changing line, scared of lorries overtaking them and so as soon as possible get into the middle lane and trundle along at their preferred speed (60 in my mothers case) and damn anyone else.

Please encourage your mother to staff off the motorways, or take some motorway driving lessons to help her confidence.
Drivers who lack confidence tend to be the ones that make mistakes from my experience. They're often the ones coming off slip roads at 40mph and pulling in front of traffic that's doing 70mph because they feel nervous.InsideInsurance wrote: »I've come to ignore them, if the inside lane is clear and its the one I'm in, I wont move out to overtake them when I can continue in the inside lane at a constant speed without any obstructions/ slow moving vehicles ahead
I've seen where people have been fined for doing this before, but the middle lane hogger wasn't.
I do about 30 miles per day motorway driving for my commute middle lane hoggers are a nightmare. They don't seem to understand heavy goods vehicles can't go to the outside lane to pass them and instead sit cruising holding up the flow of traffic bliss in their ignorance. All your base are belong to us.0 -
It seems to be a daylight phenomena. My current job entails me going the full length of the M56 & parts of the M60. During the day it is horrendous for middle lane hoggers but when I finish at about 11PM the vast majority of people are using the left hand lane and pulling back in after overtakes0

She's 72 - I dont think things are going to change. Of cause she will tell you she has never had an accident in 45 years of driving (obv all the cases of reversing into static objects dont count as accidents)0 -

You are so completely wrong and confused.
Everyone knows that lane 1 is called the slow lane and is meant for trucks and caravans only so you keep out of that lane.
Lane 3 is called the fast lane and is for very important people in a hurry, so you keep out of that lane too.
That only leaves the middle lane - so there is nowhere else to go - innit.
You only go left at the very last moment possible to dive down an exit lane. Very tricky as you need to go between trucks and caravans.
Motorways are very scary and dangerous places.
You should know this.0 -

Happened to my cousin "undertaking", he got pulled over and given a warning0 -
Most middle lane hoggers are put off being in lane one because, when they want to pass the HGV they are slowly catching up to, they get stuck in lane one because of the ignorant 80+mph drivers boring down in lane two who fail to recognise or consider that the car in lane one may wish to move into lane two. They are generally the more timid driver who is frightened by the aggression of such a driver, so they find that sticking in lane two minimises that conflict.
The solution is for all quicker drivers to assist these more passive drivers by accommodating their move from lane one to lane two without fuss. This will make the more passive driver more comfortable about sitting in lane one, if he can easily pull into lane two when needed without the (perceived) threat of conflict or aggression.Make everything as simple as possible, but not simpler.0
