I definitely don't think you are over reacting. We also had a small wedding and did things the way we wanted to (abroad) but because we didn't have a huge all singing all dancing affair we have been made to be the lowest of the low by my sisters as a wedding is a 'family' event and we should have had everyone there! Even if we only had immediate family and A few close friends there would have been 40 of us!!!!
I did them all out of a big party but I'm not worried about that, our wedding and a blessing day at home for our parents and kids cost us less than £2500 all in instead of at least 4 times that if we had married the way society dictates everyone does these days!

Oh, my sister is getting married next year and having the full works, there are a lot of people wondering how she is going to be able to afford it but she won't have us and our 5 kids to worry about as we won't be there. Not MSE for her and not MSE for us either as it would cost us at least £1000 to go before we even thought about a present!

You did it your way, your mil will just have to get used to that!
