If so many people feel so strongly, why don't we get socialist governments voted in?

"It is essential for the welfare of millions of people that we stop austerity and halt this coalition government dead in its tracks before it does lasting damage to people's lives and our public services."

They've been saying that for four years now and things are ticking along ok.

I don't think anyone is saying that everything is perfect. But we have record employment rates, inflation is low, the housing market (whether you're happy with the level of growth or not) hasn't crashed, the NHS certainly hasn't collapsed. Things are ok.

Simply not possible to ignore a £100 billion black hole. Would be nice to continue to live beyond our means. Rather selfish though for future generations.

By comparison to the dire state the UK was in the last time we had socialist policies similar to those advocated by the protestors, things are somewhat better than just "OK".

This recession and it's aftermath was painful for a small minority, (as all recessions are) but overall it's been significantly less painful for significantly fewer people than some previous recessions.

Sadly a lot more didn`t show but as already stated, it was given scant news coverage. It is certainly true that those with a vested interest will play down the numbers that attended. I am pleased that people are getting a bit fired up about things that do most certainly matter.

Yes, getting fired up about not being handed other people's money.

If they'd cared as much when they were at school, they'd not need to march now.

A voice for "a living wage, proper housing, workers rights, public ownership of the banks, against tax avoidance".

Thing is, did anyone know it was going on?

All the major press ignored it.

Basically they sare saying this is the fight of the "ordinary person", fighting against lack of social housing, lack of job security (zero hours etc).

Don't agree with everything they say....but often on here people say "well why don't you do something about it". It seems people are, they are just conviniently ignored. BBC don't bother evening mentioning it anywhere? 50,000 is quite a number to get out there on a lovely day and march through London.

Bloody Socialists, to be busy spending other peoples money, sorry my money.

Frack em, frack the lot of them.

Amazing how they can always find the energy and motivation to go on a march but not get off their backsides and get a bloody job.

We live in a first world country, these people are not starving, they have healthcare and a roof over their heads (might not be theirs, but it's a roof)

Yet they still riddle out of the woodwork like vermin and ask in Oliver twist style "Please sir can I have some more"

I think this is a typical view but fails to account for the fact that many of the cuts implemented don't actually kick in until 2015. The record employment rate hides a grim reality of low wages and zero hour contracts, some are now saying inflation is too low, the NHS is in a complete mess, report after report says that. I think things are ok for those of us who already 'have' and have insured themselves against misfortune. However a young person starting out now faces problems and issues I never faced. Talking to my next door neighbour....he works full-time and so does his wife...they have three kids and a really struggling. The eldest son has had a succession of insecure jobs and the daughter wants to go to university and they say they are going to have to find 60k to fund that. Of course living in London the prospect of any of these kids finding their own accommodation in the foreseeable future is negligible.

The Huffington Post covered it as did the Evening Standard, ITV News, The Express, The Spectator, The Herald, Sky News and The Independent.

BTW, the Socialist Worker seems to think that the numbers in the march were 'up to 20,000' rather than 50,000.

I wouldn't trust any number from the SWP, I wouldn't even ask them the time.
