50,000 strong march in London

A voice for "a living wage, proper housing, workers rights, public ownership of the banks, against tax avoidance".

Thing is, did anyone know it was going on?

All the major press ignored it.

Basically they sare saying this is the fight of the "ordinary person", fighting against lack of social housing, lack of job security (zero hours etc).

Don't agree with everything they say....but often on here people say "well why don't you do something about it". It seems people are, they are just conviniently ignored. BBC don't bother evening mentioning it anywhere? 50,000 is quite a number to get out there on a lovely day and march through London.

    Really?

    The Guardian isn't "major press"?

And the protest was primarily against government cuts.

Organised by "The People's Assembly Against Austerity", a "broad coalition of anti-government groups that embraces trade unions and other campaigners".
People's Assembly spokesman Clare Solomon said: "It is essential for the welfare of millions of people that we stop austerity and halt this coalition government dead in its tracks before it does lasting damage to people's lives and our public services."

Sam Fairburn, the group's national secretary, added: "Cuts are killing people and destroying cherished public services which have served generations.

I'd advise against you popping down there Graham, they wouldn't be happy if they knew how much you supported cuts to housing benefits, etc..... ;)

50,000 is a small number relatively.

The media normally under-estimate how many were there if it does get a mention as well..... Shockingly the police aren't strangers to these tactics as well.

The Huffington Post covered it as did the Evening Standard, ITV News, The Express, The Spectator, The Herald, Sky News and The Independent.

BTW, the Socialist Worker seems to think that the numbers in the march were 'up to 20,000' rather than 50,000.

You do yourself an injustice trying to pretend it was just about government cuts.

Look at what Russell Brand said:
"The people of this building [the House of Commons] generally speaking do not represent us, they represent their friends in big business. It's time for us to take back our power," said Brand.

That doesn't even mention cuts, he talks about job conditions, zero hours, wage oppression etc etc.

And the Peoples Assembly was set up on an open letter in which they wrote:
In the letter, they wrote: "This is a call to all those millions of people in Britain who face an impoverished and uncertain year as their wages, jobs, conditions and welfare provision come under renewed attack by the government.

The sell off of the NHS is very real. Virgin Healthcare are already taking over large swathes of specialist care such as elederly mental health.

It's 6 blokes marching ... and 49,994 who heard about "a big march" so just turned up to see what was going on as they were bored and it was free.

Suggests a political agenda rather than having any constructive input into resolving the real issues.

Sadly a lot more didn`t show but as already stated, it was given scant news coverage. It is certainly true that those with a vested interest will play down the numbers that attended. I am pleased that people are getting a bit fired up about things that do most certainly matter.

anyway wanting to make an serious political or economic point wouldn't include Russel Brand or the Socialists workers party
