Checked on Crucial and they're selling 2 sticks 1GB RAM for Vostro 1000, for £56.39 incl. VAT
Guaranteed compatible memory upgrades for your Dell Vostro 1000 Laptop/Notebook.http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/listparts.aspx?model=Vostro+1000
.....then sell the x2 512mb sticks on ebay that come as standard with the Vostro on ebay? Think I'll go for the Vostro 1000 with the upgrades to x2 dual processor £35, battery upgrade £11, and screen upgrade £11.
Still makes the deal a good'un at £350 all in, (plus £56 for the 2gig ram), so just a kick over £400.
Unless someone can find something wrong with that.........?
I don't know how dell works when it comes to RAM, but might be worth phoning them and asking if it's possible to have 1x1gig ram instead of 2x512mb and see how much extra(if they will even do it)it will cost, that way you only have to buy 1x1gig from crucial. Could work out cheaper, but all depends on weather dell will sell a 1x1gig. Worth a try though.0 -
The heading to this thread is a tad misleading as the £292 laptop is not 2gig but is actually 1.8. Unfortunately I only noticed this after ordering, although I'm not that bothered.
Not sure if anyone else has noticed this, I have scan-read the thread.
Cheers,

So, anyone managed to persuade Dell to send this out with XP instead of Vista yet? Be interested to know (and any tips if they did) as I'm thinking of ordering this in next day or two but only if they'll ship it with XP.0

Ok, I just contacted them to ask if they could send it with XP instead of Vista and they pretty much point blank refused, said it comes pre installed with OEM Vista, nothing they can do he said.
Anyone else have any luck?
The only help he could offer was a recommendation for this:
Inspiron 6400:
Intel® Pentium® Dual-Core T2080 Processor (1.73GHz,533MHz,1MB L2 cache)
Genuine Windows® XP Professional - English
1 Year Base Warranty - Collect & Return
15.4" Wide Screen WXGA (1280 x 800) Display
1024MB 533MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [2x512]
80GB (5400rpm) SATA Hard Drive
Intel® Media Accelerator 950 Graphics Up to 256MB shared graphics memory
Fixed Internal 8X DVD+/-RW Drive including Software
6 cell Lithium-Ion Battery (53 Whr)
Comes out at £350, about £30 more than the Vostro (with upgrade to Athlon X2)
Any thoughts on this or perhaps getting the Vostro and removing Vista and installing XP myself (Got an old SP1 disc lying around somewhere)?
Anyone know how difficult it is to remove Vista and replace it with XP? (assuming I can find that old XP SP1 disc)

Hi
Our laptop packed in a couple of months ago and I have been watching the forum for a good deal to replace it (repair is too expensive) and we have a PC so no real hurry.
My question is, do you think this is a great deal to go with or would you recommend holding out for a better deal? Like I said we do not urgently need a new laptop but will be buying sometime over the next few months.
Thanks for your advice and to the OP for the spot! The Best Things in Life Are Free0 -

I have just ordered this one for my son as he wanted XP and an Intel processor. It also comes with two years McAfee security, which is worth a bit. I thought the spec was pretty good for the price.Stopped smoking 27/12/2007, but could start again at any time :eek:0 -

I've been looking at laptop prices for the last two years on/off and have noticed they gradually go down in price, hanging on a while might mean you get more for your cash so if it's not urgent then might be a good idea to wait as long as you can, specially with all these free laptop offers around at the moment. Laptop market is so competative i think prices will continue to fall untill next generation technology comes along and whole process stars again.0
