I've taken the plunge and just ordered this deal Vostro 1000 with a couple of tweaks:

    - dropped the service to 1yr base warranty
+ upgraded processor to AMD Athlon 64 X2 Mobile Technology TK53
    + upgraded screen to TrueLife
    + upgraded battery to 6-cell

Price £350. Delivery expected by 10 Aug.

If the price on this deal drops on Thursday I'll eat my pants! I've come to terms with giving Vista a go. Who knows, I might get used to it.

I'll order 2Gig RAM for £50 somewhere and sell the 2 x 512megs this comes with on ebay (thanks to poster who suggested this!).

I think is pretty good deal. The 6400 deals are similar too, I think it's being phased out....
  • Hi all,

This is my first post so sorry if i've missed anything!

I've read all of the posts in this tread and to be honest i'm going number insane!

I am looking for a laptop to run office applications and a few games. This is what i've worked out so far:

    1) This laptop isnt going to cope with the games, due to the graphics card. Something with dedicated memory is far better.
    2) Vista isnt ideal but it isnt the end of the world either
    3) Processors are a major issue for some people! But probably wont matter to me that much, whatever i buy it will be dual core.
    4) Microsoft office is a rip off and openoffice is a much more economical solution (cant believe how many people still give money to microsoft when there is potentially an equal free option!)
    5) RAM is far cheaper to source independently

If any of this is wrong then please correct me and this all means that i'm no nearer to getting a good priced laptop to suite my needs! But thanks to this thread i now understand that! :D

Does anyone know of any other laptops that would be suitable (i've looked on currys refurb section and i'm just totally confused by it all now!)

    Thanks inadvance!

P.S. dell, comet/currys/pcworld (all pretty much the same thing) are part of the nectar group! Triple points in July as well!! Hope this helps someone.

That looks like a very fair summary - your name does you down!

To be fair about OpenOffice - it will never be a completely 100% compatible replacement for MS Office because MS will not reveal how its file formats work (even the latest supposedly "open" ones) so other software will always have to guess what's going on. But unless you want to do something very obscure, the differences shouldn't cause a problem.
Time is an illusion - lunch time doubly so.

Dunno if anyone has posted up Val-U-Computers, as I haven't time to read 8 pages alas, but I replaced my work laptop, a Dell D600 with loads of memory and RAM, for £325, original price 1400 - they are A grade listed, refurbished - you could not tell the difference from new, honest, and their service was impeccable. They do all sorts of makes also, I just went for the Dell as my old one was the same. Students and charities get 10% discount, which I got as a charity. I really recommend their products and their service! I even bought two more for the office, excellent stuff! Oh, by the way they come with a year's guarantee/warranty, which is all you get from Dell anyway! Can't say fairer then that!

Just to let everyone know before the offer ends, I managed to get the Vostro with XP instead of Vista without too much hassle. Asked on their online chat and once again got refused point blank. Stated that a 'friend' ;) had just ordered the exact same laptop and managed to get it with XP.
At which point, after a minute or so pause, he did a u-turn and said that if I called their sales phoneline they could offer me it there. Called, stated what the chat agent had said and they gave me it with XP without even querying it. The Indian call centre is hard work though, but got there in the end.

So its ordered, thanks ALOT to the OP for posting the original offer :money:

    Hello,

    1st post!

I wil buy a laptop this summer (XP preferably), for you MSE veterans, is this current Dell deal a good one? If so I may take advantage of this deal,

    thanks!

I think the Vostro 1000 deal is a good un, particularly with the low cost upgrades noted above, which gives you a 1.7GHz dual core processor (+£35) laptop, with the ability to upgrade the RAM to 2Gig cheaply. Don't upgrade the memory via Dell though.

You can buy 2 sticks of 1Gig RAM for the Vostro 1000 for £57 at Crucial.

All in, this gives you a Dual Core 1.7GHz 2Gig RAM 15.4" Screen laptop for sub £400. As longs as you're not a hardcore gamer, it's a good deal (if anyone knows of a better one for £400 please post it here!)

Note Dell price change tomorrow. Don't know if this offer will be affected.

If order now can I cancel the order later (may be tomorrow), if I feel that the next week's offer is a better one.

I missed a very good offer in March 07, when DELL were offering a Dual Core Inspiron, 1 gig ram, 160 GB HDD + carry bag + printer for only 329. This one doesn't seem to be a very good offer, if I compare it with that one.

    Can anyone please advice.

Pretty sure that you have at least 7 days cooling off period for anything bought on the internet.

7 day cooling off period starts when delivery is made, distance selling regs, lots of people on UK hot deals order on Weds and cancel Thurs morning if a better deal is available. Look out for Mike's posts on UKhotdeals on a Thurs morning.
  • My daughter needs a laptop for uni but wants one which has powerpoint and excel. Not computer literate so dont know if i bought one of these dell vostro ones with vista that she would have what she needs. Can anyone advise me thanks
