Pretty poor form to sell it, should be given back to the person who gave it to you.

From what the OP says, her ex had some pretty bad form of his own. smiley-rolleyes010.gif

When a man proposes he gives a woman a ring as a promise of his love and good intentions - when the dirtygit breaks his promise a women will either break his face or sell his ring. I think the lesser of the evils is to sell the ring and have a party.

When my dirtygit of an ex did the same for me I hung onto the ring for about 4yrs to get a better price - then used the money as spends on holiday with my new fiance. All is fair in love and war!

You're talking about traditions around engagement rings when a relationship breaks up - and a pretty old tradition at that.

I suspect the OP is talking about physical or emotional mistreatment by her ex.

Hardly in the same league when you're talking about right and wrong..

It was a gift, therefore it belongs to the OP to do with as she wishes. I don't see how that is a "wrong".

But they never got married, which is the point of the ring.
  • IMO if she caused or initiated the break up then the moral thing would be to hand it back, but if he did then she should keep it. Sounds like the latter so I reckon sell it and treat yourself with the money.

I didn't want anything to do with the ring or the money, as I felt it was tainted. I took it to a local cancer charity shop and gave it to them. The lady was very apologetic and explained that they wouldn't sell it in the shop, but would sell it for scrap metal value and it would probably be melted down. I said 'That's fine. Probably the best thing for it!'
