Orange numbers, with 4 flashing orange dots - no speed cameras.
White LED numbers in a red LED circle, one for each lane - might have speed cameras.
Generally other drivers know what's what. If they were still doing 60+, then there won't have been speed cameras. (For some reason people just ignore the orange warning speed limits, these days - though the authorities tend to mis-use them, anyway).0 -

Was it the 'normal' speed limit sign - circular with red border, or square with just '40' in yellow with yellow flashing lights above and below?0 -

To be valid, the NIP has to be sent by them within 14 days. (This limit applies to "simple" cases only - car hire, lease cars, etc. may not apply).
The NIP may include an option to pay and accept points there and then, and/or options for speed awareness course.0 -

It wasn't orange or white it was a red 40 and a warning triangle and if I was doing 60 there's no way everyone was doing 40 as I would of had to slow down0 -

There wasn't any yellow bits just a big black screen showing a warning triangle and 400 -

It has to be issued within 14 days (thats they last day the Police etc have to post it, so it could take 16-18 days to get to you etc).0 -

In that case its probably an advisory limit, in order to be an enforceable sped limit sign it must be a white number within a red circle, either as a traditional printed sign or displayed on a display screen.0 -

I might be colour-blind.
Definitely one or the other.0 -

A single, very large screen towards the left side of the road (rather than one small screen above each lane?) Possibly with wording beside it, warning of a hazard?
Some of these can display an enforceable limit, but are not usually linked to speed cameras.
edit: Here's a picture of a variable speed limit gantry. If it didn't look like this, it won't have had speed cameras.0 -

I don't think you can get speed awareness courses for motorway offences. I thought they were only available for restricted speed area (30mph) offences.0
