What probably happened is he works in a school and they are increasingly more and more horrible as the term drags on (or that might just be where I work). Tired children, tired staff, tired parents and we have to 'do' Christmas and keep the pressure piled on for results all in the knowledge that the ills of society are lain at our door - doesn't always fill you with optimism.

    But now it's Christmas!

MrB. your toilet tale reminded me of mine.

Luckily, I have a couple of mates who are plumbers, so gave one a ring and he told me what to do.
Like you, mine was a close-couple system (for those not in the know, a 'close-coupled system' is where the cistern bolts directly on to the bowl.) but I had know idea until I had started. Ended-up with 2 trips to Screwfix, but even having to spend-out on 1x Fluidmaster mechanism (these are superb as if they break, you replace the whole unit without having to remove the cistern), 1x close-couple kit, 1x tube of plumbers mastic and 1x padsaw, I still only paid-out £38 which is a lot less than a plumber would charge.

I had an absolute stinker of a cold when I had to fix my loo (the handl had stopped working) and thought it would only be a quick job to do. 3 hours later (and 2 goes at getting everything water-tight) job was completed.

Not sure how wise I am daring to post at such a late hour (6.24am) as it's bound to only be a matter of microseconds before the whirling dervishes I live with start whirling again. Christmas was lovely, undramatic and relatively dry - but the weight is refusing to get back onto its downwards trend - I guess plateauing isn't a bad thing over this festive period.

Plumbing-wise everything seems to be ok - I have a cloggy U-bend to deal with today but that's kids stuff (I can sense the pathos as I am typing this), and if I really want to get into my alpha-male mode I have got a couple of light fixings I can replace.

Big news in my world is that another workplace is very keen to speak to me - much more up my street regarding the kind of people they deal with, and so with the reluctant blessing of my current place I have filled out all the requisite paperwork - and hopefully in the next couple of weeks I can get all the formalities sorted out so that fingers crossed come Easter I will be feeling that old buzz of job satisfaction again.

Blimey - can't believe it's been a whole week since I posted. And a stodgy dour joyless week it has been. Started off with a Triple Sunday (from having had no Mondays to contend with for the previous two), this one just stacked them all together and gave the whole house a very downbeat vibe. Work was seasonally glum and I was waiting for word from my potential next place of when I could go see them, plus Mrs B has been having work-related trauma. On the plus side, because I cannot stand the atmosphere in the office, rather than spending any time in there whatsoever I used my free time to walk around the site, and managed to clock up three >10,000 step days. This in turn has led to the Christmas bulge being brutally vanquished - am down a somewhat alarming 10lb since Sunday (must check that both my kidneys are still there). Anyhow, as I can hear the beasts stirring upstairs I shall cut this short - have an appointment Monday afternoon which should make my future a lot clearer, Mrs B should know how her path is panning out by Tuesday morning, and after getting through a Friday Night Lite (couldn't have any wine as I had to pick up DD from an event late last night) I now have a Diet Saturday to contend with (we're going to friends tonight and I'm driving). So due to circumstances beyond my control I find myself thinner and dryer than this time last week.

I have always hated this half term....nobody in the mood including the biting hissing frogs and the days seem as short and as dark as ever :(

Another week over, and what have I learnt? The meeting at my potential new workplace on Monday went very well, just have a couple of formalities to get through but am 95% certain I'll be there after the Easter break. This is a relief as things at my current place continue to be annoying - it seems like everyone is ramping up their pomposity. Still, nine weeks and counting... Looks like we have scraped through another month financially intact, although without the tax rebate I don't know how we would have done it - actually that is tripe, I do know how we would have done it - we just wouldn't have been able to spend money when we wanted on what we wanted. We need some financial discipline back for February. Weight-wise I'm just hovering about a stone higher than I should be - but two stone lower than where I used to hover. It's all a bit balanced and dull here at the moment. Not that I'm complaining. Or maybe I am? Back to bed I think.
