... can some one explain why NatWest insist on writing Basic account on my debit card? is it so that anyone who takes a payment from me can be I no doubt about my financial situation? Surely only I should be privy to the fact that I have a basic bank account?

Most bank cards give something away about the cardholder, and I doubt that you'd get very far with a claim of discrimination. NatWest's black card for private account holders, for instance, would probably mark someone out as quite well off. Is this unfair discrimination in favour of the wealthy? Should NatWest give everybody a black card so that their standard current account holders, let alone basic account holders, don't feel left out? Should the likes of Coutts be banned from giving out debit cards at all just because they won't accept the hoi polloi as customers?

Everything in life says something about a person, from the clothes they wear to the car they drive, etc., but you can't complain about discrimination when people notice these signs. You might as well say that asking for your address should be banned in case someone notices that you live on a run down council estate instead of in the heart of Chelsea.

Further to my above post, is the fact that NatWest print basic account on the front of my card a breach of data protection? why do they feel the need to discriminate ?

The card design is being re-designed towards the end of the year so it may change then !

    You sound paranoid.

With Chip and Pin retailers barely see cards; even less with contactless transactions.

    No, it's not a breach.

Not all banks have basic account written on their cards- I have three basic accounts with Barclays, the Co-op and Halifax and out of those only Halifax has the name of the account on the card but it says EasyCash and not basic. My Co-op card is just plain blue- it looks exactly the same as the full card on the full account my Mum had- and I have a personalised card with Barclays but even on the plain one it doesn't indicate the type of account it is.

don't worry too much about the 'basic account' being displayed on the front of the card.......what company/person is not to know that this card is just for your payment/spends etc. and that you don't have a 'premier, ultimate, reward, black, gold' card or account elsewhere for other purposes
Piggy-banking is how a lot of people budget these days, me included ;)

    Hi rich_shot2003,

Yes, that change has now happened with us. New and replacement Cash Account debit cards issued from this month onwards will have this extra functionality and so customers can use their new card at LINK and Visa ATMs in the UK and abroad. Account holders whose cards don't expire in the next couple of months will receive one of the new cards automatically by the end of September.

    Hope this info helps,
