Isn't the registration required so you lock yourselves into a new tv deal with Sky? That's what I read somewhere.
I am still unsure whether I will be locked into a new 12 month contract if I opt to add Sky Sport 5 (free of charge) to my existing Sky Sport subscription, which has only a couple of months to run.
Has anyone managed to get a definitive answer to this question? The information on the "MySky" website and on Channel 407 is as clear as mud!
It does seem to intimate that you MUST register if you want to receive Sky Sport 5.

For me, I already had Sky Sports so it was a simple decision. I suppose if you haven't got it then it doesn't sweeten the deal as much.
You might already have it but you have it on a contract that does not have 24 months to run. Which if you take their deal on what is effectively the "slow lane" broadband service is what you will be doing.

The providers are always offering deals to try and get customers to switch or sign up for 24 months. If you only have a few months left on your contract or are out of contract many of these FREE deals are actually more expensive than switching or as in the case of "slow lane" broadband tying yourself to a service that may well not be fit for your purpose in the near future.

I'm also a Sky sports subscriber...but the big downside for me, was the extra telephone costs when switching line rental/calls to Sky---it was going to cost over £100 in total per year more which dwarfed the "saving" on b/band vs my current ISP.

Im really disappointed at Martin's weekly email not pointing out that sky are only doing this 2 yr "free" broadband to hopefully keep hold of you when BT takes the Champions League next summer

Anyone that watched Champions League that signs up to this with Sky is crazy
  • As an existing Sky customer I recently took up the 'broadband free for two years' offer online, however within a few days of doing this the possibility came up that we may have to move and not be able to take Sky with us. Not wanting to incur any early cancellation penalties with regard to the new 18 month contract, I looked up the Consumer Contracts Regulations regarding 'cooling off' periods, the way I saw it was any contract for a service agreed online has a 14 day cooling off period. I emailed Sky on the 14th day explaining the situation and could they please cancel my free broadband and go back to my original contract so that I wouldn't incur a fee if I had to cancel Sky.

I received an email back from Sky pointing out that they have no cooling off period and if I cancelled the cancellation fee would apply. Tough.

Wonderful customer service, but is what they say legally binding ? Can they get out of having a cooling off period in this way ?

I have just signed up for sky tv with sky sports and I have also taken this offer. I am however only tied in for 12 months so I get cheaper broadband for 12 months. I will then likely move to another provider after this.

Regarding the BT sport getting all these games in 2015 does this mean as a really big football fan I will have to purchase bt sport in order to watch any football in 2015?

If you want to watch Champions League yes as BT Sport has all of it even the current ITV games.

Although I wouldnt be surprised if they resell some of it to ITV to keep some on free tv

So Sky hope dangling 2 yrs free BB at people and the redundant within a year sky sports 5 at people will stop them going to BT Sport next summer - in their dreams

    Thanks for the info :)

Haha luckily the two years free offer is now valid for two years for me but its only a 12 month contract so I will most likely pull out of that after a year and switch to BT to then get BT sport free (if the offer is avaliable then) or just switch to another provider.

Indeed. Going back to the rights they have secured though, BT won all the live UK TV rights to UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League and it is stipulated in the contract that BT must show a selection of games on free to air television, which include showing each British team at least once a season and both the finals.

In regard to the new FA Cup contract between the BBC and BT the BBC were awarded the first pick rights, so they'll be on FTA TV as well.
