Well Sir, as said we only became aware of it as the call arrived to the Mother from the child, it was a long time since any of us used the bus service in any regularity, and even then we got on at the rear and there was a conductor.
So naturally we would think that 18 is the classed as adult fare<snip>
The adult fares start at 16 nowadays, have done ever since I was a kid.

This is because you can legally leave school at 16 and get a paid job (I know this is changing to 18).

There was a Channel 4 TV series that was produced and presented by children, and one of them got to record a piece where they asked a spokesman of their local bus company why the adult fares started at 16 and not 18 (when the law considers you an adult), and he basically said what I said above.

Indeed they did, I guess as my colleagues and I have not been subject to that aspect directly as we are parents or grandparents now :o, but thinking back I guess some of us may have tried it on at the time or at least once :o

Each bus company sets it own starting point as to when to charge the adult fare.

For example the Morebus company (Wilts &Dorset) Child fares are available until a passenger reach their 19th birthday.

Again with Yellow Buses child rate until 19

Another company Norfolk Green has a three tier fare system Under 16, 16-19 and Adult

This is just three of many, There still a few bus companies who still start the adult rate at 14

And when I was at school, adult fares started at 14.

OP, even though it is a long time since you last used a bus, I am not sure that you will ever be able to recall adult fares starting at 18. ;)

Nope it was 16 on the old WMPTE buses, I think a week bus pass was £4.50 the time I was 16, the rear entry buses were around but my Mum took me on those, I remember being scared looking at the ground moving as the bus approached the bus stop , but some routes like the number 11 kept using them for sometime after the introduction of the single man operation buses.
Funny enough I remember wanting to become a bus driver :)

    It was 16 for me.

In my country of origin, there are no discounted tickets for anyone, so we should count ourselves lucky a little.

I wonder how these private bus companies stack up when it comes to so called "penalty fares"? Has the company in question suffered a loss of £35? If not, how could they justify this "fine"?

There's much debate about this sort of thing in the private parking threads.

Maybe the buses have got some dispensation (i.e. they are above the law), I don't know. Anyone advise?

On the point of a 16 year old being forced to give a name and address, I would recommend they don't. As someone pointed out, they bus company could always call the police if they weren't happy. Also, I'd be surprised if the bus company staff had any authority to "detain" someone. They could be on VERY dodgy ground with that one.

    no they don't!

No one has the right to detain you other than the plod with good reason. you are free to walk away whenever you want they may only follow you and inform police to deal with you.

You are mistaken, any one can use "reasonable force" to make a citizens arrest. Although, in this case, it would require fare dodging to be an "indictable offence" which it may not be
