I wish there were cameras on the ones in Stoke-on-Trent. The amount of people who clearly don't understand how they work is ridiculous and they always cause blockages and increase congestion.

If you are very good with the clutch & brakes it is possible to keep creeping forwards so that you don't actually stop moving whilst in the box, then there is no offence, provided that you were completely over the stopline before the red light.

Are you sure? As above, the rule is that you must not enter the box unless the exit is clear. It doesn't say you must not stop in the box.

The offence is not "Entering when your exit is not clear" it is stopping within the box due to stationary traffic. It may be stretching a point, but if you don't actually stop, you can argue that you didn't have to stop.

The Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2002

    7. (1) Except when placed in the circumstances described in paragraph 8, the road markings shown in diagrams 1043 and 1044 shall each convey the prohibition that no person shall cause a vehicle to enter the box junction so that the vehicle has to stop within the box junction due to the presence of stationary vehicles.
    (2) The prohibition in sub-paragraph (1) does not apply to any person—
(a)who causes a vehicle to enter the box junction (other than a box junction at a roundabout) for the purpose of turning right; and
(b)stops it within the box junction for so long as it is prevented from completing the right turn by oncoming vehicles or other vehicles which are stationary whilst waiting to complete a right turn.
Prohibition conveyed when markings are placed in conjunction with signs in diagrams 615 and 811

    8. When the road marking shown in diagram 1043 or 1044 is placed in conjunction with the signs shown in diagrams 615 and 811 on an area of carriageway which is less than 4.5 metres wide at its narrowest point, the road marking shall convey the prohibition that no person shall cause a vehicle to enter the box junction so that the vehicle has to stop within the box junction due to the presence of oncoming vehicles or other stationary vehicles beyond the box junction.

(I can't fix the fonts, something happened when I cut & pasted)

If you've been caught out by this scam - and that's precisely what it sounds like ...

No, in this case it's an attempt to let ambulances get out of the station when they're in a hurry. So that when you're in the middle of a haert attack over being "scammed" they won't be held up by all the idiots driving nose to tail and refusing to give an inch.
Waiting for the exit to be clear is BS harped on by people who never used a box junction in Central London during busy hours. You just have to take your chances and look forward at the flow of traffic and estimate whether by the time you get to the other side whether there will be any space for you.

Most of the time if you literally stop and wait for clear space on the other side what will happen is that the idiot on the lanes beside you will change lanes in the box junction and take your spot.

Except that, in this case, there are no other lanes and no other entrances to the box except for the ambulance station. So you can easily stay out of the box until the exit is clear unless there's an ambulance coming out - which is exactly what it's there for!

It IS a scam if you've no alternative but to drive into the box (as per my example) and they then fine you by remote spying. I make no comment about the particular box junction; I've never been there, but if it's exactly as the OP suggests then "scam" is the right word.

Well, a link to streetview was given early in the thread (you need to turn left to see the box) and there's absolutely no way you'd be "forced" to stop in that one. So no, in this case, it's not a scam.

I'm guessing that what you actually mean is if you don't enter your box junction and block it, traffic from a different direction enters the junction when their lights are green, and they block it instead. So, the answer is to break the law before they do? Which is why enforcement of all of you squabbling over who gets to break the law first is needed.

It's actually two lanes although it's often used as one lane by the bad drivers, it's compounded by a bus lane a bit before so you have two lanes of traffic. The people who don't understand how bus lanes work frequently try to cover both lanes to stop the bus lane traffic.

The traffic branches off after the traffic lights, right towards Putney on the South Circular and straight on towards A3. So you get a lot of twonks trying to change lanes or jump the traffic.

It's obvious there's a fire station there so very obvious to leave the space for the fire engines to get out.

I'm not sure how people get trapped on this box as you can clearly see the traffic lights changing and it's one of the easier box junctions in London to negotiate
