No unfortunately the school will not be able to accept all the children in the party at 8.30am. In the meetings today, they have asked for them to be at school for 10am for departure at 10.30am. There are a couple of parents who cannot get time off work at such short notice, so if the kids cannot go in at 8.50, I have offered that they can drop them and their luggage off with me and I can take them into school.

I probably am making a bit of a fuss, but my son is going to a different senior school than all of his classmates. He will still be able to see them outside school, but I was hoping they would have a memorable time for the right reasons. I am sure it will be.

Perhaps if you stop putting such a dampener on things he would have a wonderful time.

As parents we should be helping our children realise sometimes in life things don't go to plan, there will be disappointment and teach them how to deal with it, show them that mostly there is a silver lining. Reacting the way you have reacted over something really quite trivial, is only really achieving one thing, the inability to cope when things don't go ones way! We have enough spoiled precious brats in the duration system, try not to add another one for the hardworking teachers to deal with!!

That's a kind gesture on your part.

While I haven't agreed with your views about the change of venue I think the school are being unreasonable on this dropping off time. They probably don't want to supervise excited children for 90 minutes or more so they're making it difficult. I don't think that's acceptable given the change of timing.

Unless you work at one of the top grammar schools in the UK then no, he won't be starting at your school in September, you can breathe easy.

    Oh dear. ........

I replied to the original comment with the sarcasm I felt the poster was implying. It is very difficult to judge tone in the written word.

I wasn't implying any sarcasm. I was making a very simple point, albeit not in support of you. The image was of a 'time vampire'. You've asked for opinions, presumably, by posting on here, so I've given you mine. There is an issue with your son's school trip which has arisen through no fault of the school. You've been offered an alternative which has been arranged, or the chance to remove him from the trip. No-one is evil. No-one is vicious. Something has happened which wasn't part of the original proposal and someone at school has had enough extra work to do with sorting out all the arrangements that they now need to change, and they've had a lot of extra work to do. No-one's fault, stuff like this happens all the time in schools. Staff are already going above and beyond in arranging the trip - it's a voluntary activity, they don't have to do it, and there's a part of me that is always pathetically grateful to any staff willing to put their career and professional reputation in the lap of the 'trip gods' and risk ever bothering to arrange any trip at all for our pupils, much less the significant demands and stresses of a residential. They can really, really do without unnecessary, needy, whining parents who want the world to go back to how it was before the 'problem' arose.

He can't go the the IoW. Do you want him to go to Norfolk or not? If so, smile, encourage him, and thank the staff. If not, smile, encourage him to enjoy his lessons in school that week/day/couple of days, put your name on the 'Please refund me' list, and thank the staff.

As for me? I've worked in a few schools in my day (I'm quite long in the tooth now!), from inner-city tough comps, to a top grammar school and including a stint as a lecturer in a university, and am an adviser to a Russell group university on secondary education. The school I am at gained 'Outstanding' for the area I take lead responsibility for in a recent Ofsted. As you expressed an interest.

A change of destination at such short notice must have been frustraing for so many people. However, sometimes things happen which are beyond our control. This being the case, wouldn't it just be easier to 'go with the flow' and try to make the best of what is available. That's how I would approach it anyway. I think children are very flexible and the trip will be an adventure - whether it's the IOW or Nofolk (both great places). At the end of the day I would just be so grateful that I had a child who was healthy and happy enough to take part in such a trip. Anyway, I hope your son has a fab time and brings back lots of happy memories :)

OP, you expressed some concern about your son's SATS a couple of pages back, due to his teacher leaving shortly before them. Are you aware that SATS don't matter for the child in the slightest?

They are measuring the school, not the child, and make no difference to the child's future in any way whatsoever.

You'd think she would as both her children are going to one of the top grammar school in the UK ;)

    But hey ho.

I am so glad my parents were normal.... I can't believe how pushy some are now. They just told me to try my best!
