Just a brief couple of comments, from this mum of 2 and gran to 5 natural grandkids and step-parent/nan to another 2 kids and 5 step grandkids:

When kids start nursery or school, nothing will ever be run exactly as parent or child might expect/want, but that's life and kids do adapt, as they will have to, over the years.

My kids, grandkids etc.,, all did the obligatory Christian prayers etc., - none are remotely interested in any religion now, so it did them no harm, and we have some lovely pics of all the nativity plays lol

The OP needs to just chill a little....;)

    Lin :)

I accept that it did no harm, but what was the point of it?

So what's the point of having the prayers, etc, in the school?

It's quite possible to have lovely of the kids doing all sorts of plays at school - it doesn't have to be a nativity.

None really, bit like Algebra has had no point in my life........but we all have to do pointless things in life, and it is those that make us 'get' the things that do actually mean something!

The "we've done it for hundred of years" is a valid response. This is the culture & history of England & Wales that developed & evolved over hundreds of years, many children were raised in the same system who have no or different religious affiliations, you included & because of this culture & history are allowed & have the human right to disagree with it and you have choices in how much you allow your child to be involved in it but it is an important aspect of our culture.

These are relatively modern rights and have increased as the stronghold of religion on daily life has deceased.

No, sorry, I have seen these alternative plays, and despite me being non religious, there is nothing quite as lovely as infant age kids doing the nativity and singing the carols.....:)

It's part of our tradition, and doesn't harm a soul.

I agree but they have happened in a country with it's foundations in the Christian faith. We don't have to beleive in it to appriciate it's effects.
I don't respond to stupid so that's why I am ignoring you.

Can you be more specific? What effects?

People going without while the church gets richer? Holding power over the masses via intimidation and fear?

I used geometry yesterday to put some things up on DD's wall. Chemistry last week in making a cake, and this morning in cleaning my bathroom. Physics to teach DD how to ride her bike uphill on saturday, and to explain how the brakes work.
