Just had to google proprioception. :o
Know I'd heard it before and couldn't remember where, then remembered it was when doing a sensory assessment with someone with autism. I guess it's something that most of us take for granted till it goes pear-shaped.

  • I had to google that myself. Interesting!

Regarding proprioception, I remember reading, some time ago, about synthetic pebble paths being used to improve the balance of elderly people. The idea is that you walk on the 'pebbles' in bare feet and the proprioception induced gradually improves balance and mental function, too!
I think the pebble paths are graded for difficulty, too. They are portable - you can roll them up, I think.

Also, walking with your arms freely swinging is good for the brain. Holding bags or handbags is the worst thing you can do! The free swinging of the ams is like the patterning used to improve brain function in cerebral palsy infants/children. The four limbs moving synchronously has an effect on the brain.
That's why when I walk anywhere, I use a backpack and leave my arms free.

Boohoo! I missed the post about the timer, but whatever it is, I want one too!

What about acupuncture, does that do anything for you, if you don't mind me asking?
I'm generally a sceptic on the alternative front, (don't get me started on homeopathy,) but as acupuncture is kind of nerve related (ish) and does seem to have more proven effects, I was curious whether anyone had tried it for something other than stopping smoking which is what I mainly associate it with for some reason.

  • My GP wants me to try acupuncture for relieving pain. He is qualified in it but won't do it until my thyroid is stabilised because it can have effects on other areas of the body.

The pebble idea is really interesting, Pyxis. I wonder if it might help me with my balance problem?

You can get shoe insoles as well I think, along the lines of the pebble idea. Although that's less about balance and back onto proprioception for people with autism to help ground them and so they know what their feet are doing in relation to the rest of them. (Along the same lines, I remember one chap I knew who used to put glass in his shoes and take his socks off so he could feel it better.)

Well, acupuncture is generally regarded as complementary, rather than alternative. I believe that there is research that tested its efficacy on more than one occasion, and it does seem to work for all sorts of things.

It is used as an anaesthetic for some surgery, too.

The problem is, I think, that it is also an art, and the choice of the points to stimulate, and the combination of points, is rather subjective, and so is very dependent on the level of expertise and experience of the practitioner.

I did have a course of treatment some years ago, but this was given by a friend who was in training, so any improvement I experienced was a bit limited.

I would be very happy to have it as a treatment by an experienced practitioner.

Re. Pebbles. I have tried googling it, but can't find it. I'm sure I've got some paper info about it somewhere.
There's another thing that might help you with balance and that's a wobble cushion.
You can sit on it , and it's wobbly! And you can stand on it and improve your balance.
The hardest thing is a wobble-board, but
I wouldn't recommend that to start with. A wobble cushion is gentler, but believe me, it's still quite hard, but effective if used frequently!

There are lots about, but here's one.

To begin with, you may have to lightly hold onto a chair, or at least have a support you can grab if you topple! And it needs to be stood on in bare feet! When at the computer, you can sit on it!

I have had acupuncture ( by two practitioners) and for me it wax not effective. However, my condition is neurological and it might be that it simply is not appropriate because the neurological pathways are slightly screwed.

Re wobble cushions, I can sit on an exercise ball etc. my torso is pretty ok, so I can make adjustments for balance there. What I often cannot do is feel limbs or have finer dexterity in them, so for example, when it was still riding, I could often sit on a horse, but giving a finer leg aid ( where we " nudge with legs is different for what we ask...on the girth, behind it, how far behind, how much effort might be needed, and how often.....) that was often beyond me because I simply couldn't feel that. Sometimes I think walking I have lifted a foot High enough and I haven't. I have to kind of goose step or shuffle, partly because of the nerve thing and partly because of muscular and soft tissue adjustments my body has made.
  • Is that like sitting on a water buffalo on that Wiii game?

(For those who think I've finally cracked totally, there's a Raving Rabbid game where you have to sit on the wii board and guide a water buffalo - which is on its back, with you using it as a sledge - through a slalom course. Mr JM has no balance standing up, but uses this as exercise. :D )
Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).
