  • I could be curly, i suppose! I do brush and brush it after washing and it ends up straighter and wavy but if I scrunch it, it definitely curls. The shorter it gets the more easily it curls. I used to find using an afro comb easier but it doesn't help with the tangles at the back of my neck so I just hack at it with a brush. I am not exactly gentle with it, I need to learn to be nice to my hair, too!.

I haven't tried brown sugar - always interesting to try something new thanks LiR!

I've been experimenting with bicarb of soda and water as shampoo and apple cider vinegar and water as conditioner as a more natural option than traditional cosmetic shampoos/conditioners. I have fine straight hair. This is working really well for me but I do find that I need to rinse really well and work it into the scalp. No smell of vinegar. I want to be able stop shampooing all together but I work in a customer facing role and I'm not sure I am brave enough to deal with the inbetween phase! I'm not making any recommendations just thought I'd share about my experimenting, read about this elsewhere on the forum...

I used to loosely plait my hair when it was longer to stop it tangling, also I finger comb when its wet which is painless.

Love the image Whitewing of WaS in a billowing wedding dress at therapy :D and LiR's OH analysing the cats dreams :)

    Haybel what is moon sand?

WaS. Please be kind to your hair. Fine hair, especially dry fine hair is very vulnerable to breakage. :).

I wonder if you could nurture your hair for a while in the way you deserve to be nurtured. The Afro comb is good, but I'd ONLY use it while conditioner is in your hair, and very, very gently, from the ends working up, section by section, teasing out tangles.

Maybe for Christmas you could ask for a silk pillow slip?
  • Oooh, good idea on the pillowslip, LIR! You may have just saved my partner who agonises every Christmas over what to buy me. As I don't do much the options are limited!

I am just beginning to realise how rough I am with my hair, I honestly just wash it and hack at it with a brush until it looks reasonable. I am lucky it hasn't all fallen out! Perhaps caring for my hair could be something kind I can do for myself, it is my favourite part of my appearance so nurturing it would likely make me feel better about myself. What an unexpected but positive conversation!

The brown sugar I use is not soft brown sugar, but the harder one. Nice on scalp. Sorry, stuggling with words this evening.
  • Ok! I shall give it a try. I rarely pamper myself with anything so I am looking forward to it. It also feels like a really healthy thing to do and I owe it to my hair as it is one of the few things I can say that I like about me!

Oldestgnome moon sand is made with flour and either baby oil (which then makes it smell amazing) or vegetable oil. Its roughly 8 parts flours to one part oil. It can be made in literally just a few minutes but behaves in much the same way as normal sand except that it is much softer to the touch. Despite being made with oil it is not in the least bit oily once mixed.

My little one loves to play with it and we build sand castles and all sorts. Its great fun and as we have laminate floors very easy to clear away even when it gets everywhere. I believe you can add colour with powder paints but we have not tried that yet. We discovered moon sand at a baby group we used to go to.

Sounds perfect for when my 2 1/2 year old godson next comes over, thanks Haybel.

Just googled the brown sugar scrub and it looks like its good for getting rid of build up in the scalp... http://lovenaturalsunshine.tumblr.com/post/16614709855/brown-sugar-scalp-scrub-recipe
    Recipe: Brown Sugar Scalp Scrub

    2 tablespoons of Olive oil

2-3 Tablespoons of Organic Light Brown Sugar

3 drops of your favorite essential oil (helps invigorate scalp)

    Recipe Instructions:

In a small bowl mix ingredients. Add enough sugar to make a thin paste. Do not heat the oil as this will melt the sugar. On dry or damp hair, part and section the hair into 6 or more sections. Clip or twist the hair to keep it in individual sections. Take a scoop of the scrub and apply to scalp, separating hair to reach entire scalp. In a circular motion, slowly scrub the scalp with the mixture for 1-2 minutes. Refrain from scrubbing roughly, as this may lead to irritation. Rise well, then shampoo and condition hair as normal.

do this over the sink... sugar falls EVERYWHERE (apparently!)

Can also use coconut oil with the sugar which is what I intend to do later - will report back!

I don't blame you WaS - it is great fun. Try and make with baby oil if you can smells heavenly then. Any flour will do. Looking forward to hearing all about it.
