That sounds lovely, LIR! I have some children's books which I wouldn't part with. Anyone remember The Very Hungry Caterpillar? I still read that now.Until one has loved an animal a part of one's soul remains unawakened - Anatole France

Those threads are so sweet! I could join in but considering every time I try and talk right now WaSp is jumping in with "You have lost your brain cell?" people might scratch their heads!Until one has loved an animal a part of one's soul remains unawakened - Anatole France

I didn't have the very hungry caterpillar. I had a book about a fuzzy egg that grew. I think it was called the fuzzy what was he. I had lots of books, in two languages. My little niece is being brought up in two main languages and is completely bilingual, but also is spoken to by relatives in other languages. ATM fir is speaking to her in English because her parents aren't that worried about her learning Italian at this stage, but my sil speaks to her only in French, and some other relatives speak to her only in German.
We all usually speak pigeon together but they have asked when we meet that we pick a language at stick to it pretty much at least for chunks of communication so that she gets an idea of which words go together in which language.0 -
That will be such an asset for your neice when she grows up0

As a 'languagey' family its something none of us can really imagine, but I still thing the potential of a potentially quadralingaul or more, tot is incredible. We know lots of bi lingual tots, and a few trilingual ones, ( dh's sister indeed was brought up fully trilingual).
A lot depends on their next move. ATM they are making applications world wide for jobs, so depending where they go will depend on whether she needs to learn another language or not.0 -
There were some little boys, twins, near where I used to live in Spain, whose mother only spoke to them in French, their father only in English, and their friends and teachers only in Spanish, they were completely trilingual. What an asset.(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0 -

I've know a few like that. A friend in Italy was same set up ( swapping Italian for Spanish). The school were dreadfully opposed because it was slowing the child down, but he caught up.
I think in today's world it might be more useful if one of the languages were eastern or middle eastern but .....you go with what you have, and these are our natural pool, so its not about 'asset' no much as not being held back. The German is because DH and his siblings do not have German, and so can only speak with that side of the family in English. Which is fine, they all speak English....( I don't speak German either btw) but they think it would be nice if that side of family speak in German to her.0
