Is it a city? There might be places to go in the evening, late night opening at museums for example. Or if the hotel has things like massages you could have one half way through.

When the light nights are back you can be walking with your dog!

Its a town and most things close early. No cinema or anything. Because the company I work for are tight, its liable to be the Premier Inn so no massages.

I've emailed the training company to see if they plan to run the course up here soon, otherwise I guess I'll just have to suck it up.

You wouldn't think that 6 years ago I went off travelling to Australia on my own, would you?

I've been down there for a course before and I really badly missed DH and that was before Dumbass Dog, pathetic creature that I am. The course is held a few miles from the town so will involves taxis there and back. Last time I went all the other attendees worked in the building so went back to their desks at lunchtime and breaks and home at night so it was pretty horrible.

Well, I understand. But you'll have wifi, and can down load lots of good stuff to read ( unless they give you lots of work).

I think the missing them will be the same when ever ;)

Ah I get you. Think I must be the complete opposite lol as I'd love the chance to be on my own in the evenings, but would come out in a cold sweat at the thought of having to socialise with anyone else on the course :rotfl:!

Is it vital for work? Do they often run the course in other locations?

A relative was Welsh and didn't learn English till she went to school. Later in life she moved to England - it always worried me that if she developed dementia she'd lose her English and revert back to Welsh so no-one would understand her. Didn't happen, but I've always wondered if that's a real possibility or if language is more hard wired and harder to lose. Any of the founts of all knowledge on here have any idea?

I had a non-English relative, who moved to the UK in her twenties, lived, worked and brought up a family here. Had 'reasonable' spoken english but tended to rely on others for paperwork etc. Long story short, she developed some sort of dementia in her sixties and reverted to only speaking Greek which caused huge problems in the nursing home she was in.

(She was part of Ex H's family so I wasn't in contact then just heard about how she was.)

  • I love this thread, I learn so much!

There is nothing wrong with liking chemists! I used to spend hours in the giant ones as a teenager, well about an hour at toiletries alone.

Without being depressing and going on we have BIL problems again. I had sent MIL a bunch of flowers just to thank her for looking after us when we visited and wrote in it "Just because we love you". MIL said how sweet it was and how much she missed me, to which drunk BIL then started saying she didn't appreciate him even though he does everything he could for her, that WaSp leaves him to it and that I am not even family. This culminated in him saying "Let's look what else they've bought you" and ripping the wrapping off her blanket which we had bought her to open on the day and throwing it at her before storming off upstairs. MIL called us in tears. I have no (nice) words...

Grrr at BIL, sounds like he's being a nasty piece of work  how horrible of him to do that to your MIL :(

    Sending *hugs* for you

  • Aw, thank you MU. From a therapeutic standpoint I know why he reacts this way, it is because of his own guilt that he feels he doesn't look after her adequately. Any time she mentions anyone else doing something nice for her he reacts badly. It is still no excuse whatsoever to behave like this to his 94 year old mum, he has no right to take his own feelings out on her and ripping open her gift and then throwing it at her isn't on. She was so upset and still saying maybe she doesn't make him feel appreciated enough and it's her fault. It totally isn't and we are pretty annoyed at him, he is behaving appalling again.

You could always skype DH and Dumbass dog (says the woman who has no inkling how to access the webcam on the laptop.) That might confuse his poor little brain (dog, not DH that is.)

Last time I went away I quite enjoyed the break from Gitdog, mother who was dog sitting was far less enthused. But there were other colleagues staying who I could chat to over dinner and it was only a couple of nights - I did quite like not having to think about food, cleaning and spending the evening catching up on some books I'd meant to read for ages. I guess it depends on how much you like your own company - I'm used to being on my own so it's not so hard.
