I've been Money Tipped! Debt-free and Proud!
I ventured into the free weights section today. Surrounded by beefy muscle men making strange noises and faces....and then there was me, doing my tricep rope (8.75KG) and I was sweating like a pig!

    Hahaha!

Well not really advice, more of a question. Often read on here about people wanting to lose some weight and they seem to be spending time pushing weights around , now I would have thought that, that time would be better spent stimulating the cardiovascular system , would you agree?

I think it really depends on where you are in your weight loss. Do you have a lot to lose or are you at the toning stage. There is always a need for cardio but weights will give you better definition and shaping whenever you are ready to tone up.

I do a mix of both. Usually 45 mins to an hour of cardio and then 30 mins weights.

Its better to do weights first, cardio second. Cardio can raise the level of cortisol in the body.

Its best to do weights, go home, have a rest, eat some protein and back out to cardio, not always practical, but always weights then cardio.

Weights also burn fat much better and faster than cardio.

If you do something like High Intensity Interval Training, which is still cardio, you can burn calories for up to 24-48 hours after.

I do 4 HIIT classes a week and I lift weights 3 times a week, its both together thats improved my fitness. That and clean eating as well.

Does it, I wasn't aware that anything burnt fat , exercise uses calories and if you want to lose some weight , you need to use more calories than you put in your mouth.
If we are talking about the most time efficient way of burning calories , would have thought that high intensity cardio vascular would use more calories per hour than pushing weights around.

You'll burn small amounts of fat in a HIIT session, one instructor I know has a heart rate monitor and at the end it tells you how much fat youve lost during the session, its about 60g for a 30 min class. But you'll keep burning cals up to 48 hours after the session ends, you wont get that with exercise like aerobics.

Its not just about calories, its about the quality of the calories. 1000 cals of chocolate wont obviously give someone the same nutrition as 1000 cals of fruit and veg

Its hard to compare one persons training session to another. I know people who lift heavy weights who eat 1500 cals for breakfast and they might be 16 stones, but their body fat percentage is around 10 per cent

Ive lost about 46 pounds in just over a year, I didnt count cals or anything else, what I did was cut my portion sizes, cut down on processed food and white carbs, ate more fruit and veg, cut down on alcohol and ate very little junk food

Some people will be lucky genetically that they can train hard and eat crap and still look good, but Im not one of them and most of the population isnt

What I will say is that as someone who teaches HIIT classes and does them, its got far more benefit than just weight loss. I just finished an 8 week bootcamp, along with clean eating. I didnt lose any weight, but my fitness was tested before and after and my after results were much much better than my before. I actually lost about 6 pounds in the ten days between bootcamp 1 and 2 and I suspect my body by that time was just working quite efficiently

Its possible to put weight on and lose inches and lower your body fat percentage. The cals in and cals out theory works for some people, but very few people lose weight in a straight line, its likely to be lose, gain, lose, gain.

I hit several plateaus in the last year, it took me months to get one of the stones off after losing a lot at the start.

People really need to get into the mindset of eating clean, lifting weights and doing HIIT if they can. Its the best way to get fit, healthy and its really not as tough as people think it is.

One thing I dont do is go to a class and think I burned 400 cals in that, its just a workout to me and I also dont eat my exercise cals back.
