I usually ask on twitter or the like if 2 adults can win.

    What's the usual response, Jo?

I think that's a really good way of handling the situation, incidentally :)

    Thank you all.

So far I have refrained from entering 'family' hols or any group hols for more than 2 people as I'm unsure (hence me asking). I recently saw a golfing holiday for 6 people, that would be ideal for me as I love golf but won't be able to fill in 4 other adults.

With group holidays, usually the accomodation is an apartment/cottage so what difference does it make if it's only filled with 2 adults? surely those running the comp pay the apartment rental based on dates/time rather than amount of occupants?

From the responses it sounds as if it could be hit and miss whether I'd be able to go if I won. If I had to take two children with me, I could take my niece & nephew but that isn't ideal (as that's not a holiday for me to be child minding).

Some of the hols are not specifically designed for children but just offer extra plane seats and accomodation to children but the hols and activities itself can be enjoyed by adults only.

Rather than criticising single adults for entering and possibly winning, I think if there were to be criticism, it should be towards the company running the comp for either not making it strictly clear and/or allowing the adults to take up a 'family' holiday.

I don't understand how anyone above 12 is not a child, aren't all under 16's (or is it 18) legally considered a child?

I think that's a fair point, and I mentioned above that it's the Ts and Cs that need to be made crystal clear.

I think you're right about it being hit and miss, but there is always the possibility of Tweeting or sending a FB message, like HazyJo does, to ask about whether the holiday is families only....

I'm getting mightily fed-up of these holidays for 4, 6, 8 (adult) people as well... Not all of us are overwhelmed by a large friendship circle to go away with that many people!

I don't get the 12 distinction either... Like you, I am pretty sure it's 16 that kids can - essentially - do what they want to without the say-so of their parents...

I do hope it's 'upto 2 adults & 2 children', otherwise it'd be excluding single parents and/or families with only one child :)

    Really?
Most parents have friends with children of a similar age so a single parent with one child could invite another parent with one child also along to join them-and two families would benefit.

Sounds like win win to me

I think the "children under 12" thing is probably because that's how airlines price their fares: under 12 gets a child fare, 12 and over gets charged as an adult.

FWIW, I'm a single mum with one child - he's 15, so doesn't fit the usual child criteria but I still see us as a family.....

I'm sure there was a case recently where the winner of a family holiday was a couple without children and the Company wouldn't let them take children that weren't their own, so they missed out.

It may have been the Sun but there was some discussion re much the same:

    Here
  • I won a holiday to Turkey last year, it was a 2 adults & 2 kids family all inclusive holiday one week holiday. My children were 6 & 13 at the time, and originally we were told it had to be taken in July but my husband couldn't get time of in July at short notice so I asked if there was anyway of changing it.

For £500 they changed it to a week in August
For £97 they allowed us to pay the difference for the 13 year old (airlines class 12 as an adult!)

So some companies are flexible .... I haven't found one yet that isn't PERSONALLY & have won a few holidays/weekends away now.

I'm wondering how many would a) bother to respond and b) if they thought you're too much hassle by asking them to be specific (which they should have been in the first place) then to them, it'll be easier to just disqualify you discreetly and let another person who wouldn't be so nit picky win. It's not as if they have a shortage of entrants who fit the criteria.

It's bad enough 2 people arranging the same annual leave off. More of a nightmare than it's worth trying to get more than that especially at short notice.

Another thing that pees me off is short/weekend breaks to somewhere far, offering only 2 nights. I don't bother entering those either as by the time you go through the whole airport checks and flights/transfers you're exhausted and most of your day is gone even with a flight in Europe.
