it didn't say on their menu that you only get 17 chips

Have you ever seen a menu that specifies how many chips you will get with your meal? I haven't and it seems like a very odd thing to expect.

Maybe they should have had a metal/plastic sign up warning of the quantity of chips?

I wonder how many meatballs they would have served or indeed whether they would have let you have a chip to taste.

    (Sorry OP)

I find the food is pretty generic, if keenly priced. The atmosphere in most of their pubs seems pretty warehousey, the ones I've been in at least, but the beers have been excellently kept as a rule, far better than many indie pubs, and with a staggering range.

I'm a little out of date in my cellar experience, but 5 days sounds short for a keg lager. Especially as 11 gallons is the smallest keg going, and we used to use 36 gallon kegs at a regular pub in the 1990's. Maybe the clientele were less fussy, but I always understood it was pretty much dead and inert compared with ales. I knew one holiday park, mind, which served Woodpecker cider well over a year in the keg - times and standards improve!

I found their meals very hit and miss.

One time the burger is lovely and the chips very nice as well. The next time, the burger is so so and the chips appear to have been the last of a bunch, that has been hanging around for 10-15 minutes. I find the chips to be in the poor - just passable category more times than not.

Yes they are cheap, but I'd imagine they are still very much making a decent amount of profit from their food, so still expect a burger and chips to be at least cooked properly and hot.

Plus, in my experience, if you go to any greasy spoon, it's extremely rare to have anything but a freshly cooked burger and a huge plate of chips, with salad as well, for a comparable price.

But do greasy spoons sell a wide range of alcoholic drinks? ;)

The chips are bloody awful anyway....main problem with beer range is its to big,you can't have 9 different lagers on sale and have the turnover to ensure no keg is more than 5 days old.my ex local has this problem and some lagers are rank..real ales not much better........gave up going there now use proper pub with proper beer couple of miles away

I presume your ex-local doesnt have a proper chilled cellar or perhaps doesnt clean their pipes as often as they should.

If its losing its taste in 5 days, theres definitely something wrong.
