I'm even more confused now - if you're my age (20s) what do you wear to a wedding then?

Whatever you want! I don't know where these "rules", these "dress codes" come from?

I just cared that they were wearing a smile for us!

I love this comment! Wish I'd thought of it! :rotfl:

At my wedding last year, there were kilts, suits, tee shirts, leggings. long dresses, shorts, short dresses. My bridesmaid daughter wore converse trainers with her short bridesmaid dress. (Just as well, she's over 6ft and would have towered above DH in the pictures!) No MOB but MOG was beautiful in a polyester dress.

    And yes, everyone was smiling!

In fact who wears a stole at all, fake fur or real?

Anybody who likes them would wear one....If I had have got married in the Autumn/Winter, I would have wore one for sure. I think they look awesome and vintage, and it would have looked really good with my 50's style dress.

Trouser suits on a 70 year old ......a look that looks even older! I'm not really into Jaques Vert type things ...look too WI function for me. The dress order is COCKTAIL DRESS - and if I google cocktail dress now, most of them aren't even knee high. So I have the option of old lady trouser suit - no thank you - Jaques Vert coat & dress - again, no thank you, above knee cocktail dress - purleese! Or slightly longer - on the knee - my knees are not pretty things, nor actually are my ankles. So I'm going for the dress I mentioned before. As I said, the wedding is at 4pm in the afternoon, going on to the cocktail hour - so I'm happy with my choice - as is my DIL - and (most importantly) my 16 year old DGD - who thinks it is fab! The mother of the groom is wearing something similar, I understand (thought I'd better check!).

I've got a similar style, but without sleeves, from Hobbs and they wear fabulously - comfy and no creasing. Loved mine so much I bought another pattern in the sale and then another from EBay. The only trouble is the length as, at 5 3, I always need them to be shortened and I can't do that myself with a Jersey fabric. What more can you want from a dress - stylish, timeless, comfortable ..... and on sale! Great find, and you will look and feel fab!

I for one will never understand why some people get so hung up about what other people wear!

Exactly. You might think it to yourself, but at the end of the day why worry about it or !!!!! about it If the person feels comfortable in what they're wearing then that's all that matters IMO.

I have a fake fur stole. I didn't buy it, and I haven't worn it.

I also have a fake fur hat which I wear most of the winter. I have a vintage fur scarf. I suppose I might wear that to a wedding day time in the winter. I wear it a lot in winter. Its warm. I didn't buy it.

So many judgemental comments about what people can or cannot wear at weddings...

To me, a long dress (maxi?) is perfectly acceptable to wear at a wedding. Why wouldn't it be?? And if the woman chooses to accessorize with whatever she wants - stole, fake fur, hat made of plastic birds for all I care - as it's a special occasion and she wants to make an effort, then why the bloody heck shouldn't she?

If I ever get married and I'm lucky enough to have my lovely mum there, she could wear a bin bag and I would thank my lucky stars she is able to see me getting married. I certainly wouldn't criticise or comment on anyone's choice of attire behind their back like a gossipy matron. Now THAT would be deeply tasteless.

PS: Thorsoak, that dress is just FAB. Elegant and understated, very graceful. You are going to look a million dollars! :D

I think I can probably tell the difference between a pretty maxi-length day-dress and an evening gown. If the OP says it was an evening gown then I'm quite prepared to believe her. Who wears a fake fur stole with a day dress? In fact who wears a stole at all, fake fur or real?

Have just bought a dress for a friend's daughter's wedding. It's long and fuschia pink. :) This is it:
