    ""This thread makes confusing reading""

The thread does, probably just continuing in the way it was started.

So your now saying that by your neighbour parking a meter over your drive it stops the occasional visitor to you from parking there?
My neighbours car stops my visitors from using the space where my neighbour parked. Space on the road in front of the dropped curb .
The word "dilemma" comes from Greek where "di" means two and "lemma" means premise. Refers usually to difficult choice between two undesirable options.
Often people seem to use this word mistakenly where "quandary" would fit better.

Errm so it is fine parking in front of dropped curb entrance t drives then ?

No it isn't normally but your neighbour knows you do not use your drive & therefore he isn't blocking you in or out.

I think you are being petty too, he knows you don't use the drive.

I've had a similar problem where I live with people not using their drive but wanting to 'reserve' the space in front of it. One house has a bit at the side that actually isn't wide enough to get a car onto, they've moved now but the old owners would keep their wheelie bins on it and then park across it on the road but leave notes if anyone else parked there (if they'd not already put thier wheelie bins across the space.)

Another has paved the front garden (no dropped kerb) which is only just deep enough to get a car on sideways but they wouldn't be able to as they have a bench there but they left a note on my car when I parked in front of it. We live near a station so they probably assumed I was a commuter who didn't know that they never park there and not a neighbour who would see them park their own car in exactly the same space the next time I moved mine.

Nobody has any divine right to park in front of their own house (let alone reserve a space for potential visitors!) Your only right is to park on your drive so either do it or stop being petty.

Trying again - he does not do it to anybody else , just me. Nobody else does it to anybody else.

Trying again - Is he doing it deliberately, and unnecessarily?

Well it is difficult to imagine how one could not deliberately park the car by half I'm front of entrance to someone's drive and.that someone always happening.to be me. Its not my placento speculate how necessary is his parking there , he has options of parking 50 yards up or dow the road as usually there is space here and there ot get rid of his 2 vans that are parked forever on his drive - not my business to assess his necessity .

So some say it is not illegal to park blocking dropping curb , some say they would write a note to rhe car parked like that even if it was for 10 minutes ..

So if he wants to park near his house he has to park partly over your drive because you have taken up a space on the road when you could be parked on or in front of your drive.

It is absolutely not illegal to park blocking someone out, it is illegal to block someone in. As has been pointed out, you do not own the bit of road in front of your house.

It would seem that it is against the law to park across dropped kerbs, unless the Parker has the permission of the householder :-

"There are two types of dropped kerbs, those outside driveways allowing easy access to the residents of individual houses and those used for pedestrian crossovers.

The law basically says that you should not obstruct dropped kerbs unless you are obstructing a dropped kerb outside a house with the permission of the owner. Of course, obstructing any dropped kerb will cause inconvenience either to the owner of the property who cannot obtain access or egress from their property, or in respect of pedestrian dropped kerbs you can even cause danger to pedestrians, particularly the elderly, disabled and mothers with prams. The legislation which allows local authorities to issue Penalty Charge Notices to vehicles parked across kerbs is the Traffic Management Act 2004 and the London Local Authorities and Transport Act 2003. Parking across certain dropped kerbs is also contrary to Highway Code rule 243 which states:

    DO NOT stop or park:
    • where the kerb has been lowered to help wheelchair users and powered mobility vehicles;
    • in front of an entrance to a property."

However, it seems likely that the neighbour thinks he does have permission.

It might be an idea to have a chat with him next time you know you're having visitors, and use that event to clarify the situation.

I can see that it can be annoying, but it may be a small price to pay for having an otherwise very good neighbour. :)
