Whether that's "right" or not is a different question.
Same as the classic roundabout accident ... where you have the dithering halfwit that didn't move out into the massive bl00dy great big gap that you expected them to while you were eyeing up your own entry point and getting ready for it. I've "nearly" done that soooo many times.
Easy answer. Look where you're going, if you need to eye up the car you're trying to beat, rather than the space you imagine should be there, the gap probably isn't big enough, and you're driving dangerously.0 -
Today I was a car doing 30ish on a 60 mph road, it's fairly straight, wide and conditions were perfect so I'm not sure why they were going so slow, anyway, as we entered a village with a 30 limit he sped up!0

Who said beat? Oh it was you.
And yes, I know how to do it, that's why I haven't hit the dithering halfwit in front of me. Wasn't you was it?0 -

Probably not. But I'll bet you're the halfwit stuck behind me. (half being generous, with the list of driving errors you've admitted to on here so far)0 -
Here is an example. Last night drove to Shrewsbury. The road is essentially the M54 followed by a dual carriageway built to a similar standard.
About 2 miles before the first roundabout they have put in a temporary 50mph limit but no average speed cameras. This is to slow traffic in preparation for severe delays at the roundabout which is being rebuilt but at 6 at night there were no obvious traffic queues, There were no works before he roundabout.
So having driven at 70mph and passed a significant number of vehicles and been passed occasionally by others, I then slowed down to the mandatory limit, probably was doing 48 but indicated 50.
Every other vehicle I could see on the road exceeded the limit, a significant number were clearly driving at about 80mph. With the light traffic, I felt very exposed to the speed of these people who obviously decided that as it was temporary and they could not see any obstruction, that they would ignore it. I even was overtaken by an HGV.
Now, at this point I weigh up whether I should speed up for my own safety.
About a mile into the speed restriction, there was a three car accident, and I didn't see it, but judging from the damage and the spacing of the involved cars, I'd guess someone did rear-end a slower car through the limit.
Quick poll: should the driver speed up above the limit to account for the speed of other traffic around them given there were no speed camera warning signs, works or obvious cameras? Yes or no.0 -
Yes, go with the flow, don't try to control it.0

There's a similar stretch (albeit not temporary - it's permanent) at the bottom of the A34 (Hampshire, not Manchester way!) where it meets the M3 at a traffic light controlled roundabout/overpass. For the 3 miles leading up to it, it drops from NSL, to 60, down to 50 in steps. Certain times of the day/week, banks holidays etc the traffic can backup for miles. Other times it's completely clear and people totally ignore the speed limits and barrel in at 80+ right up to the end. The reason the limits are there (with "Queues likely" signs as well) is to reduce the flow speed ahead of time in case there's a massive queue ahead. If there's not, and you can clearly see there's not then who cares?
The road is regularly patrolled by unmarked cars & bikes.0
