Whilst this thread soldiers on in its bitter and twisted way, I've been trying to think of an alternative way to look at the problem. (The straightforward way doesn't seem to be getting through).
The issue is this: 80mph+ drivers are preventing me as a lawful road user from overtaking if the need arises. I am quite happy for them to slow down to a legal speed if the need arises, whatever the reason for that need.0 -
I'm afraid I am guilty of this quite often. I live in a rural area and I'm astonished by the number of roads around here that classify as 60, yet are extremely narrow and winding. I know the people in 4WDs behind me can get annoyed but my car isn't as stable and if I were to meet someone head on my bonnet would be the one that concertinaed.
This was the A34 between Wilmslow and Congleton, one of the widest and easiest roads to drive down in the country. Nice try.0 -

Oh I wasn't insinuating you were in the wrong at all! More thinking about the extent to which I irritate other road users.
I don't find slower drivers irritating at all per se, I just expect that they show other road users common courtesy. One part of this is not jumping out in front of me on motorways, and not speeding up/baulking me when I'm trying to overtake in a safe and efficient manner.
I have a lot of sympathy with the complaint about speeders blocking people doing 70 from overtaking slower vehicles, but the principle stands.
I often find myself in the inside lane, approaching lorries at 70 and being overtaken myself. The answer to this problem is to think ahead and overtake when there is a gap in traffic, and/or temporarily speed up when overtaking. NOT to just pull out and force others to slam on the anchors.
The irony is that such practice is most likely punishing the one driver in the chain who is keeping a safe distance behind the car in front.0 -

Well perhaps that's because you don't have the answer (or the one you think you have isn't acceptable for many!) and therefore can't just sum it all up in a single post to end the debate :P
I am sure this'll go on and on ad infinitum ... there are two sides and very little compromise to be found.

This is the crux ... and is there a solution? probably not.0 -
Nothing illegal in doing what the OP is doing, but leaves them at risk of road rage.
You could put a P plate on your car, then people might get less irritated.
Note that the first recorded incidence of road rage was from the ancient greeks, King Oedipus!0 -
It would be interesting say, if someone pulled out into the middle lane at 60, cutting someone up doing 70 and the two vehicles hit who would be to blame? Surely the numpty doing 60 in the middle lane cutting someone up?0

In the eyes of the insurance company it'd the "fault" of the person doing 70 ... because they'll have just driven into the back of someone.
Whether that's "right" or not is a different question.
Same as the classic roundabout accident ... where you have the dithering halfwit that didn't move out into the massive bl00dy great big gap that you expected them to while you were eyeing up your own entry point and getting ready for it. I've "nearly" done that soooo many times.0 -
