The Welsh twits arrive in central London, when they want Tooting Junction? Didnt they just look it up online? They spend loads on travelling & Hotel bills to make a few quid selling ear muffs. Daft.

Or a manipulated story by the production company;) Funny how they ended up at the very same auction that has been in every episode. Also interesting that they went around London without transport with a TV crew in tow.

I did feel sorry for the Welsh boy again, although I find it very slightly embarrassing to laugh at him as he doesn't appear to be the sharpest bloke. I felt particularly guilty when he mentioned he aspired to having his own family, his own place and a holiday- gosh even 2 a year when he makes his money. I'm sure many of us sat watching take all that for granted.

I was shocked though that despite doing all his research (his words) he wasn't aware that the bags at Greasby are opened and cleared of valuables before being sold. He also mentioned quite distinctly that people had spent £40 on a case and found gold jewellery- yet even acknowledging this price he then goes on to expect to win them at a tenner.

I'm already planning a trip to that Bolton saleroom though just for the sheer luxury of it being in a proper building with chairs for everyone. My usual auctions here down south tend to be in large tatty buildings with no seating and no heating.

It's a scientific fact of auctions that the colder and more uncomfortable they are the better the prices.
I once went to a bankruptcy sale that was inside a massive warehouse in an industrial complex. They had all the shutter doors open in the middle of winter, it was actually snowing inside. Everyone had to keep bidding to stay warm!

Ooh, I went to one like that..I distinctly remember at one point about 6 of us (complete strangers) all hugging up to each other on a tatty old sofa just to stop hypothermia setting in. The snow was actually blowing in through the open doors....that was a bankruptcy sale as well.

I did start to feel sorry for him this week. Heis trying really hard, but without some serious cash to invest, hes never going to make big money.

I overheard an interesting conversation this week at an auction viewing between porter and three dealers that I know.

They were discussing the small boxed lots, vintage postcards, coins, football programmes etc and talking about likely hammer prices . They all agreed that they would go for around a tenner a lot and said it was a shame as a month or so ago they would have been £40 lots but all these small items in bulk lots stopped selling when eBay did away with the 99p listings. They all stood there and moaned about ***** eBay taking away their means to make a living by actually expecting them to pay listing fees.

Actually auctions have been interesting these past few weeks, I've never seen so many newbies happily clutching their newly registered bidding numbers and discussing 'that programme on the telly'. It is causing problems for the auction houses as well, I've seen someone argue that they weren't aware of the buyers premium and only wanted to pay hammer price. I've also seen them pay and ask what arrangements there were for getting the stuff to their car, and expecting the porters to not only carry their stuff, but pack and wrap it all as well in packaging supplied by the house. I'm virtually out of newspaper now as I've had to give so much to newbies who stand their with piles of china and glass all round them asking everyone passing if they have a spare box .

Personally, I will be very happy if those types of things have stopped selling at auctions ;)
