I think it varies these days, I'd hope no self respecting auctioneer would accept a single strimmer but I'm sure some do.i went to my first auction last week and I have to ask ... where do they get all that tat from? It was a general clearance auction and there was some real trash there, stuff selling for £2 etc. I assume it was mostly the auctioneers from house clearances, unless people really do take a strimmer to an auction house and say 'No less than £2 please'.
I used to run an auction house and these programmes remind me why I stopped.
There were some good parts to it but it's a lot of hard work and not always the best clientele. One of my early experiences was calling the police on someone who was getting a little over abusive and violent after overpaying for some jeans. The prices may go up in some of them over the next few weeks but probably not enough to cover the aggro that goes with new customers looking for a gold bar for 50p..0

I go for the stuff that i want personally or a box of something if i only want a few items. Sell the rest on.
But i will only pay what i think my bits are worth. So the rest can be given away if they dont sell.
+ 35% or + 37.5% though. So nothing really less than £20. One item did sell for £10 a little while back. But i thought the sellers have to pay £10 to enter them so they got nothing?Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0

Think sellers only have to pay around £2.00 or £2.50 to enter lots into an auction.
They then pay around 10-20% in selling fees + VAT on the price the lot makes (if it sells)0

There isn't a set rate or an industry standard. Most auctions don't charge a fee to enter goods, it's all commission based. 15% is about average but some charge over 30% depending on the specialist type of sale.mattcanary wrote: »Think sellers only have to pay around £2.00 or £2.50 to enter lots into an auction.

If I was entering goods to auction and they asked me to pay upfront for the privilege I'd look elsewhere..0

Not at mine. Its expensive 15% + VAT is the cheapest. With the seller paying £10 to enter a lot. Some sales are 17.5% +VAT
Not sure if sellers pay anything on top of that? Maybe why it seems so dear on the bid price.

I haven't seen the third episode yet but will comment when I have.
As for seller fees at auction, one of the ones I use charges £1 upfront regardless of whether it sells and then 10% commission on hammer piece. None of the rest, which are more upmarket (a bit) charge upfront but all charge either a lotting fee and /or commission on sales.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. But you have to admire the optimism.
The show is good entertainment, but I've be more interested in seeing people who have made a success of buying and selling - but I expect the successes want to keep a low profileEarly retired - 18th December 2014
