June 2014 Grocery Challenge

£5.60 spend in A1di today - milk for DS1, baking potatoes (hopefully cover today, tomorrow and Sunday) and 4 packs of green beans to blanch, portion and put into the freezer (before they change the Super Six this week)


Just been through my meal plan for the month annotating it with what I need (or may need - veg depends on what I have in the freezer and what's on offer where), and I spotted some very rapid duplications that meant a bit of rework. Looks as good as it's going to get now, so for June the plan shows.....

Mon 2 Chicken & Mushroom Pie & veg / Beef Bourguignon, both with mash – everything in
Tues 3 Mince & Onion with veg and jacket potatoes – need potatoes
Wed 4 Venison Casserole – need onion, carrots and potatoes
Thur 5 Tuna Steak / Lamb Chops, both with baby potatoes & veg – need potatoes (and veg?)
Fri 6 Burgers in buns with chips – need buns (and salad?)
Sat 7 Stuffed Pheasant with baby potatoes and veg – need potatoes (and veg?)
Sun 8 Venison & Cranberry Sausages with jacket potatoes and veg – need potatoes (and veg?)
Mon 9 Breaded Fish with baby potatoes & veg / Beef Stroganoff with rice – need potatoes (and veg?)

Hoping to rejig my freezers tonight, so that everything I need for June is in one, and everything I have left for July onwards is in the other. The "use up" exercise sees to be going well, but I've noticed two major problems / side effects...... the first being the huge spaces that are appearing only to scream 'fill me, fill me' (I'm trying to clear out as my fridge/freezer needs replacing, so am currently freezing veg which can be used up fairly rapidly), and the second being the rate at which my freezer bags are breeding (a lot of what I'm using up is stored in bags, so - as I mostly freeze in individual portions due to cooking for anywhere from 1 to 3 people - it's not uncommon to pull 6 or even 8 bags out for a single meal!!).

My budget is set at £160 for the month again.
Spend of £31.43 at T today, but that includes enough frozen peas for three months as they were on offer (and husband prefers birds eye ones.)

Ended way over budget for May, those bank holidays didn't help. I really need to stick my budget this month so trying for £250. First shopping trip on Sunday and just under £60 spend, not a great start

I love my graze box too I limit myself to one every 2 weeks, £3.89, but really delicious treats. One of my very few indulgences.

Two small spends to start the month. Al*i = £3.90 and Morrys = £2.49 mainly milk, tomatoes and stuff for packups for DH, as he started back to work today :T


Had HM mince in gravy (freezer), new pots and peas followed by pears and yog for me and a YS mint choc/yog thingy for DH

I have put what's left of my grocery budget in a separate purse and haven't spent a thing since Monday:D. Good job really as I am already on £131.36/£265 but I do have lots in.

I thought we might need fruit but we still have plenty in to last the week so will put off shopping again until Sunday at the earliest.

DH is home tonight so I am making beef bolognaise for the first time ever for him as he will be late in. I was veggie for 25 years until recently and still can't face mince. I will be making lentil bolognaise for me.

Have been reading but not gathering my receipts together - so unburdened my purse of them this morning and they total £45.81.

Which brings my monthly total spend to £86.37/£200 already on just 4 June. Hoping to make it till the weekend before a top up shop will be required - but its all looking a bit pear-shaped for June.
