Advice to a 21 year old?

If I could sit myself down at the age of 18 I would say:
travel
follow my career/ dreams
not allow myself to get into debt
save
start my pension earlier
surround myself with people that make me happy
don't be afraid to be myself
agree with this
just to add, money won't buy you happiness, time is precious ,don't become a slave to work , work to live ,don't live to work0 -
Stay true to yourself. Be confident. Make the most of every opportunity that comes your way. Act on your ideas. Trust your instincts. If you do all that you cant go far wrong. At just 21 you have the world at your feet. Enjoy it.The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.0

Nice age in life. My advice, random thoughts really :-)
Start good skin care.
Start a pension.
Always save a little, so you have a financial safety net in the future if something goes wrong.
Never forget, you work to live, not live to work. (Edited to say just realised a poster above has already put that! just shows it must be good advice :-)0 -
Advice by Pamela Redmond Satran
A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ....
enough money within her control to move out and rent a place of her own even if she never wants to or needs to...
A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ....
something perfect to wear if the employer or date of her dreams wants to see her in an hour...
A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ...
a youth she's content to leave behind....
A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ....
a past juicy enough that she's looking forward to retelling it in her old age....
A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE .....
a set of screwdrivers, a cordless drill, and a black lace bra...
A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ....
one friend who always makes her laugh... and one who lets her cry...
A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ....
a good piece of furniture not previously owned by anyone else in her family...
A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ....
eight matching plates, wine glasses with stems, and a recipe for a meal that will make her guests feel honoured...
A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ....
a feeling of control over her destiny...
EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...
how to fall in love without losing herself..
EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...
How to quit a job,
Break up with a lover
and confront a friend without ruining the friendship...
EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...
when to try harder... and WHEN TO WALK AWAY...
EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...
that she can't change the length of her calves,
the width of her hips, or the nature of her parents..
EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...
that her childhood may not have been perfect...but it's over...
EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...
what she would and wouldn't do for love or more...
EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...
how to live alone... even if she doesn't like it...
EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...
whom she can trust,
whom she can't,
and why she shouldn't take it personally...
EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...
where to go - be it to her best friend's kitchen table - or a charming inn in the woods when her soul needs soothing...
EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...
what she can and can't accomplish in a day...a month...and a year...

You have a strong sense of justice and what is right Wiggy (as we know from your earlier posts) so listen to your inner voice. If something feels right-then it probably is -and if even if it logically should be right but doesn't feel right- then it probably isn't right for you at that time.
That said - don't be afraid to step out of the box a bit- don't look only for reasons why you shouldn't do things but give equal weight to why you should.
You've got everything going for you and Wiglet and a fantastic adventure ahead of you.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

when you do get a job/ career etc, do start saving and set up a pension, even if your just putting ten pounds a month away
when i was 18 my mother went to the trouble of getting various financial advisors round to talk to me about pensions and i never did anything about it, only started one when they came in at work a year and half ago
start early to get more in your pot, enjoy your twenties x0 -
I know this sounds very boring, but start a pension (other than your State Pension) as soon as you can. When you're my age (64), you'll thank your 21-year-old self for doing so.
Other than that, I echo others - be true to yourself, treat others as you would wish to be treated yourself and enjoy your life.
I wish you well.(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0
